Shot Placement
« on: January 03, 2007, 03:23:30 PM »
I'm just getting started coyote hunting. I have been deer hunting for a good while. I am familiar with proper shot placement on a deer, but what is the proper placement on a coyote for a clean kill? Is their internal anatomy significantly different than that of a deer?

Welcome to Graybeard Outdoors!

You can basically read the angles the very same way as you would a deer. Either pretend that there is a ball in the center of the chest, or shoot for the opposite shoulder.
Classic broadside shots are not to uncommon because you will only call it in so far and it will circle your position to get on your downwind side. (don’t let this happen)
Under these conditions, the softer areas like just behind the shoulder will let the bullet pass on through with minimal hide damage.

As far as killing them goes, I give most of the credit to the Centerfire rifle. If you are in the ball park on your shot, that coyote just isnt a big enough animal to deal with the tremendous amount of hydrostatic shock that the .223 & up can deliver.
Instant lights out is pretty much the norm within Calling Ranges. When the hide is stripped off, large areas of bruised, bloodshot meat around the bullet hole are common. I do like to use the heavier 55gr bullets but hear good reports on the lighter ones.

I've gone to shooting them high in the shoulder no runners or spinners just drop dead.
I dont use varmet type bullets i use a heavier softpoint  65gr in a .223 or 110gr in a 6.8spc
