Son takes fist deer using a Handi
« on: December 29, 2006, 04:55:40 PM »
My 9 year old son took his first deer with a 30-30 handi (thanks Mac It's your barrel) Anouther handi moment
90 lb doe 131 yrd shot, confirmed with a rangefinder.
2 does were walking out into the field 300yrds away towards our stand. Browzing as they went. My son waited it took 20min to get to 200 yrds from us, then some crows flew in. One doe trotted over to run them off & before I could tell him to wait, they were going to come closer, because the 2nd doe was catching up to the 1st, BOOM he let loose. I asked him why he did not let them come closer, His reply " I was confident in my shot" talk about a proud Dad. He the took a moment & said a prayer for the animal because he was sad to have taken it but very proud of himself at the same time.

He also helped me field dress & butcher HIS deer!

He also remarked that he will keep his 3030 handi forever because it is what he used to get his first deer.,

I have a picture to post but I keep getting kicked out of the photo host, file is too large I think & My country dial up is sooo sloooow. If someone would be kind enough to try & post the pick I would e-mail it too you He is a very proud young man & has shown the hard copy picture to anyone who will see it.
That's my boy, GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

Congrats to you and your son thats just great. Hear in NY you have to be 16 to hunt big game and back i think in 2001 the age for small game dropped from 14 to 12. They have been fighting to drop the age for years now with no luck but we continue the fight.

A great job by both of you. It sounds like he was confidant in his answer too.

Kids will surprise you sometimes. One time when I took my son hunting he was only nine or ten. we had hunted all day and hadn't seen anything. As we were heading back to the truck we saw a bunch of little pigs, and I mean little. there wasn't a one of them over 20 pounds. I whispered to him, you wanna shoot one? He looked at them and said naw I'll let them get bigger. I was really proud of him for that. I'd have been proud if he'd taken the shot as well but his restraint was really more important.

Well done by father and son, I really like that picture. Congratulations. I don't have a young son to take hunting, but I have a young keen protégée who is coming hunting with me next fall. He will be nine and he is strong and husky.

I am going to let him fill some of my tags, and so will his Dad. We two old-timers are more excited than the Kid is.

I will buy him a rifle with a scope sometimes this year, when I find the right kind. No it won't be a Handi, his Dad hunts too but he is not very handy with tools to work on guns or to tune them and I am 150 miles away. But his Dad is a good coach.

Thanks Fred,
Just today he asked me for a new gun a bolt rifle (can't blam him I have a number myself) so looking around a little I may have to get him a REM youth model seven in 7-08 for his birthday coming up. Then he can switch out the stock latter on & have it as an adult down the road. (I can make room in my safe for one more ;)) Pulling the trigger on the price tag is the hard part
