Got my Rem. 700 Mountain Rifle today - OH MAN

What a classy lookin` rifle. I got it in .270 and can`t wait to shoot it but i`m going to do some modifications first.  I was wondering if you folks could tell me about glass bedding.  I got a web page from one of you fine folks on adjusting the trigger and was wanting some info on bedding also please. I bought Leupold bases and rings and I have to say i`m a little disapointed on the fitting of the bases. I bought the double base set and the one for the front sticks over a little into the reciever. I might have to go with the solid base and see if it fits a little better. I also bought medium profile rings and was going to see if the low profile will work. I like getting down on the cheek piece and with the mediums my chin is up too far on the stock. I had one guy on another post said he used the low rings with no problem. Anyhow just wanted to share my joy with ya.

Please shoot it before you mess with it, you may be surprised.  It may shoot as good as you need as is, but you won't know if you don't try it first.

The scope rings depends on the scope, what size is it?

Be happy it does that. Otherwise the scope won't fit. The rings will be too far apart with many bases to accept most standard size scopes. Why are you worried about the hang over? It's a heck of a lot less interferance than a one piece base.

The tube is 1" on the scope. The hang over shouldn`t be their as much as Leupold wants for `em.

I agree, do shoot it before doing too much to it.  The trigger adjustment is kinda a given but if it breaks nice and crisp even if its a bit heavy, I'd just clean the barrel real good and let drive.

Yeap those ugly weaver rings and bases are all I use,they just work for me.I agree with 35Rem,I would adjust the trigger to what you want,the try it out before doing anything to it.Never know maybe a shooter right out of the box.If not first thing I would try is putting a shim of plastic like credit card at end of stock to try more upward force.If that don't do it,I would glass it.I have one I could'nt get to shoot like I wanted so glassed action still not great,so then glassed the barrel and it went from a two inch rifle to a half inch shooter with loads it likes,still does to this day and point of impact never moves from year to year.

there is nobody else's factory rifle out there that i'd take over a Rem' Model 700!   i wouldn't do any stock/bedding work 'til i've seen how it shoots out of the box.    i'd re-set the trigger pull weight; and maybe later loosen the stock screws if they're too tight --- if the rifle started out shooting poorly.   

i would put a moly-containing automotive-type grease on/in the barrel'd action and then re-assemble it before shooting it for the first time, however.    (naturally the moly' has to be cleaned out before shooting it days later.  but the moly' will etch its way into the bore to some degree by then)  this helps to protect the metal from rusting very well.    it doesn't do anything for accuracy, of course, but it is a great aid in protecting the bore and the outside of that wonderful metalwork!

I`ve used my trigger scale and it rears 6.5 lbs.  Now that`s a little heavy but there`s no drag at all. It breaks clean so i`m going to shoot it before I adjust it.

This is the bedding I did on my 700 classic in 350 RM.  Rems are the easiest rifle to bed.  I bed and freefload all my bolt action rifles.

Bought the son in law a 700 mt in 270. A buddy and I did the trigger job . . . piece of cake.  You can get the info off of the net but be SURE TO DO IT SAFELY AND MAKE YOUR CHECKS AFTERWARDS.  This rifle shoots sub moa with no problems and with no bedding changes.  You will be glad you bought one.

I bought a 280 Remington Mountain Rifle this year. I get three shot .75" groups with out a bedding job. Just be aware that it is a thin sporter barrel and allow plenty of time for the barrel to cool between shots.

Leupold makes two versions of the front dovetail mount.  One with the dovetail between the screws and one with the dovetail to one end of the base.  The last one is reverseable and is an option to deal with different objective bells and adjustment turrets.  It is not a sloppy design, just a version to help solve mounting problems.  If you look at MidwayUSA or riflescopes.com you should be able to find the other type if you would rather have it.

I had one in the .270,dont do anything to the stock before you shoot it,mine was sub MOA out of the box.
