REMINGTON "SLUGGER " SLUGS 12 ga-23/4" vel 1560-1oz.
« on: November 30, 2006, 12:25:33 AM »
FOLKS ,
I bought a few boxes of these slugs to try in a rifled barrel . The box top stated that they only had a 4.8" drop @ 100 yds. & the other slugs had a drop of 10" . It also stated that these would give optimum performance in " rifled barrels & barrels with rifled choke tubes " .I tried some & shot low about 3.5" & left about the same at 60 yards . My barrel was designed for the BRI sabot & states so right on the barrel. The next group of these slugs shot 7 shots in a jaged hole  OR  I missed the paper altogether with 1 or 2 & keyholed one !! Hence the LARGE -3" hole group !
When I took a shell apart it was not a sabot & it had a plastic spacer over the over powder wad right under a soft lead foster type hollow base slug. Could this unattached plastic 1/4" spacer be different & make a slug drop 4.8" vs 10" /
I need a little help on this . I know what Remingtons sight FAQ states -but lets get some real life answers.
Thank you all in advance for your time & help.

The "sluggers" are not Sabots,  you will not get the same accuracy.  They are the foster style slugs.  Believe it or not I use the Brenneke K.O.s out of my rifled and smoothbore barrel with an I.C. choke and I achieve good accuracy.  1.5-2" groups with the smoothbore barrel at 50 yards.  About the same for the rifled barrel with a 2.5 power scope on the cantilever mount. I have a Mossberg 500 12 GA. combo with the ported barrels. Hope this helps.
When an Army captain asked him for the direction of the line of retreat, Col Puller called his Tank Commander, gave them the Army position, and ordered: "If they start to pull back from that line, even one foot, I want you to open fire on them."
Turning to the captain, he replied "Does that answer your question?
We're here to fight."

One more thing.  With the rifled barrel the accuracy is the same but at 100 yards instead of 50.

I have a " PENNSYLVANIA ARMS " slug barrel made for the old BRI sabot slugs-now made by Winchester. The barrel was sold by a shister named John Tannis in Duryetha PA . He took a lot a folks money for these barrels ( and 870/model 37 ) set up for slug shooting. They were/are accurate & this was WWAAYY before ANYBODY was marketing rifled slug barrels-not REM-Ithaca-nobody.At the time pie plate accuracy was the standard at 50 yards with smooth bores -even "buck barrel " smooth bores.
I got my barrel from the fellow that chased Tannis for the gun & later sold just the barrel to me .
This American barrel company seems to be hot right now-all they need to do is get a few mfg slugs to shoot & it will be the barrel of choice. They told me yesterday the were getting some great results with the 20 gauge.I just orderd an 870 Express with cant.mount in 20 .
Just remember that no matter how accurate you can shoot paper at whatever distance you still need the energy to be up to around 1000 to make a clean shoot on a WT Deer-this is of course with GOOD SHOT PLACEMENT.
Hope this helps.
