« on: November 17, 2006, 09:45:41 AM »
Come on guys...lets hear about the biggest and and most wicked of your handgun chamberings. You've spent the money...you've done your homework...you have had guns made seldom of us have ever even heard about. You waited months to have you weapons masterfully created by gunsmiths such as J.D. Jones, Bullberry, E.B. Brown, Gary Reeder...and countless others I cannot even remember...so what are they...what makes them special...what is their parent cartridges...how were they created...what is their muzzle velocity...what type of game were they designed to take...what type of bullet and manufacture is the most accurate...what kind of powder works the best? All of these answers...myself and others wish to know...Lets have some fun here...here's a chance to show off what sets our handguns apart from others!

I was hoping to get some help here. I just received my new Gary Reeder Encore barrel (.450 GNR)...in the mail. It uses a .348 Winchester case blown out and necked up to .458. It's supposed to launch a 400 grain bullet at 1980 FPS. Now all I need to get is my Encore Frame....stocks and a scope.

The 450 GNR is nothing but a 450 Alaskan/450-348 Ackley Improved.  It would be no better or worse.  I have a 450-348 Ackley Imp. and it is a good cartridge.
The only thing with it is the case head is larger in diameter than the standard belted mag and pressures need to be kept lower because of the backthrust on the Encore.  This defeats the powder capacity.
My 458 Win Mag will shove a 400 gr bullet to around 2200 with the powder suited for it.  This is from a 14 inch barrel.
This is all a moot point since anything can be killed quite well with a 400 gr bullet at no more than 1400 fps, and generally quite a bit less, and a Contender will do that in 45/70 with a 14 inch barrel with an easy load, cheaper cases, etc..
Only people a few clicks off like myself own or shoot guns that are in this power range but it is just to have something not every shooter has not because we believe we need the power.  It is just our own warped sense of fun.

I thought everyone had seen the video of the guy with the 600 Nitro Express Encore where it flies out of his hand.

That's just a ridiculous pistol.

My 14" .50-70 SSK Contender barrel gets your attention with 450 to 750-grain bullets.  The barrel is so thin with that big -.510" hole in it that a scope can't be mounted and the handgun is very light, even with Pachmayer rubber.  Actually, the 646 and 750 BMG bullets don't kick that bad as I keep the velocity around 900 fps.  But the 450-500 cast bullets at 1300 fps kick terribly - they make my .45-70 barrel with max-loaded 405s almost seem like a .357 Max in comparison.   :o

I can't believe that no one mentioned the .375 JDJ!!!  That hand cannon makes my shooting gloves hurt.  I can shoot it all day free hand, but it is more then painful when rested.  I cuuently shoot the 220 grn hornady bullets.  I am going to reload some heavier bullets in the near future, like the 300 grn.  Wish me luck.  ;)
Just another voice in the crowd!!!

Right you are Larry...the .375 JDJ is one fine Hand Canon! I've never taken any game with the 300 grain bullets...but have really done well with the 270 gr. Hornady spirepoints.

The video of the Encore with 600 nitro, if you look at it carefully, you'll see the grip is still in his hand when the barrel and reciever fly away.  I'll stick with the 444 with muzzle tamer.

I have a 6-1/2" Contender in 50-70 made by Bullberry.  It is stupidly accurate, but very hard to load for.  I got a nice boar with it last year.  It's not as mean as alot of what you guys have, but it's my biggest T/C.
