Ordered my first Handi yesterday Picked up today
« on: December 31, 2006, 11:21:37 AM »
I've been lurking around for a while here on the forums.  A friend of mine sold me on Handi's.  I ordered a .223 Bull Varmint yesterday.  Should be here early next week.  My wife got me a gift card to cover it for Christmas.  Anyone got recommedations for a bipod.  I hear Harris is a good buy.  Anyone tried the swivel model?  Any input would be great.  Now I gotta throw a scope on it and look for some coyotes.   ;D

steve

Congrats , very good choice for a first handi , but be warned they will lead to more and more . as far as scopes get the best that you can afford , i started with a Bushnell Banner 3x9 on my 223 but have moved up to a 6x18 for longer shots .

Harris makes a nice bi-pod but if you look around you may find one as nice for about 1/2 the price , some handis don't shoot well with them some do .

Thanks,  I'm looking at getting a Bushnell Trophy 4-12 x 40.  And I'll probably send the frame in for a muzzleloader barrel this spring.

Woodchucks, coyotes, plinking, and prarie dogs when I get out West again.  My buddy has a bad coyote problem on his farm, so we're going to do something about it this winter.  He's got a .243 Handi.

That was my 1st choice as well.
You won't regret it. ;D

I should also add that the people you will be shooting with or next  too will most likely become very annoyed with you when you equal or exceed there much more expensive set-up.
Brings a smile to my face just thinking about it. :)

Whatever bipod you choose, and the Harris can't be beat in my books, it seems that the Handis work best of bipods when a pressure point is added in the forearm. I don't use the forearm washer trick anymore, but I do use the pressure point trick. I use a thicker than standard piece of refrigerator card magnet, you know the type, like a magnetic business card, cut to about two inches in length by about 1 1/4 in across. I place it in the forearm in front of the forearm screw hole, toward the muzzle, about 1-2 inches, some like it closer, some further toward the muzzle end. This lets the barrel set away from the wood at the muzzle end of the forearm and gives the bipod a solid area to rest against as well. I think it keeps the forearm from "flexing" (for lack of a better word) at the point of contact with the bipod. I've only tried this on standard wood and laminated wood foreends, seems to work best with the lams, but I get pretty good groups with it like this on all I've tried it on so far.

Picked up my new rifle today.  I'm missing my scope mount and got a chamber lock for a .243 when I bought a .223.  I probably wouldn't use the lock anyway.  But I do need a scope mount.  Did you guys get them with the gun?  I also had to trim a buch of extra rubber "fur" off my recoil pad and finish screwing in my swivel stud mounts.  I could still see thread on both of them.  Maybe I'm expecting too much from a $250 gun.  I need to shoot it to know if I'll really like it.

Shoulda came with a scope mount, don't know anything about a chamber lock, they come with trigger locks normally. Wouldn't sweat the flashing on the recoil pad or the stud. Give em a call tomorrow and ask em to send you the scope rail, it should come with an Ultra rail which is longer than the standard rail. It should also have come with a hammer extension, if ya didn't get that, ask for it too.

Backstrap, the scope rail is mounted by the factory, if it wasn't on the rifle when Steve picked it up, it wasn't on it when it left the factory! >:( The hammer ext will be in a small plastic envelope, usually stuck to the inside of the box.

$250 for an Ultra is about right, so that's not an issue. If he got it from Walmart, I wouldn't expect them to do anything if the gun came that way, H&R will send the rail, no problem, they've done it before. ;)

I bought it from a local gun shop.  I've bought a few guns from them and shoot their indoor range frequently.  They are fairly new in town.  Great shop, great help.  I've had bad experiences with service and help and special orders from the big chain stores.  I really love this place and don't think they kept the scope mount rail.   It came with the hammer extension.  I checked out the gun at the store when I picked it up.  I just didn't notice the missing rail.  Everything else was there.  I'll give the factory a call on Monday to get a rail.  I haven't dealt with NEF's customer service, but you guys make them sound pretty good.  By the way it's not an Ultra.  Just the bull .223 Handi.  They guy at the gun shop said prices just went up.

Here's the shop website:  http://www.silverbulletfirearms.com/   If you're in SW Michigan check 'em out.

Hmmm, perhaps you mislead me just a little with your original post!! The only "varmint" is the Ultra Varmint, backstrap is right, $250 is a bit high for a plain jane Handi, not that the shop's service is in question, mind ya.

Another option would be to send an email to H&R with a pic of the new rifle with its obvious missing rail, explain to them exactly how ya got it.  I got a damaged BC stock back from them after having a barrel fitted, sent em an email with the pic of the chipped stock, they sent me a new butt stock 3 weeks later after they made one for me since they were out when I asked. They'll treat ya right, count on it. ;)

Sorry if I misled you Tim.  But on page 12 of the 2006 H&R/NEF catalog.  It's listed as a Bull Barrel Varmint.  Not on their website though.  I'm not worried about getting a rail from them.  Just itching to shoot the thing.   ;D

Hmmm, not your fault, another one of their typos!!! ::)

It's gonna be a little tough shooting accurate with out a scope rail!! ;D And you thought waiting the week for the rifle was a long time, now it's gonna be another week wait!! :-\

Steve

go to the shop and see if they have a Weaver # 82 mount that they will let you use , it will work for now and if you spend any time at all in there they will hook you up .

Even if you have to buy it their only about 8 bucks and your shooting .
