Welcome  newhunter06. The 45-70 sure is a lot of fun. I have a 223 for my small bore, and the 45-70 for my big bore, now I,m going to get a 30-30 to fit in the middle. Being a single shot it will have the advantage of being able to use spitzer type bullets , and by hand loading I can kick up the velocity a good bit. It will give me a lot of room to find the best load for the rifle. and I can use the same powder in all three calibers.

Welcome newhunter06. I shoot a 1895 Marlin 45-70 at 1825 FPS sub 1MOA at 100yds. with moly coated Rem 405's W/
Varget. Also bought a Golden Buffalo Hunter in 45-70. It seems to shoot real well, as much as I've shot it .Looking forward to shooting it more.

Hey Datil ...

Since I am a big fan of the .45 lc and did some research on the cartridge, I discovered that the .45 lc and the 45/70 both came out in the same year ... 1873 .. I think. I went to my friend's gunshop and pulled a 45/70 cartridge from a factory box. Oh my !!!!!! Or as they say in Spanish ...DIOS MIO !!!!!

I might be crazy but I set a goal for this year for 3 new firearms (my son is still in college)  ... one is a 7mm-08 in a Tikka T3 ss ... one is a 45/70 in a BC or Marlin 1895 Cowboy ... and one is a scoped handgun though I might just buy a scope for my Ruger SBH Hunter in .45 lc. Sound good??

What kind of 45/70 do you have? How about open sight accuracy ... say at 100 yds? I am getting a fever talking about this ....

Mine shoots about 1½"-2" groups with the WGRS and firesight combo with 28gr of 2400 and the 350gr Hornady RN and my poor eyes!! :D There was a sight adjustment in that group tween shots 2 and 3 and again tween 3 and 4, over adjusted a little!!! :-\

quick ... that is one sweet looking rifle and it shoots real good too. I have wanted a 45/70 for about two years now but my son is in his 5th year of college and I have to show some restraint. You guys and your pictures ... I'm feeling feverish again ....

In the Handi in 45/70 what kind of recoil could you expect?  I have a .308 survivor with a limbsaver pad.  How much more than that would you think?

Thanks BJM!!

PD555, recoil depends on what load level you choose, trapdoor loads are gonna feel just about like your .308, step up to levergun levels and you'll probably wish you had that limbsaver on the .45-70!!! The 28gr load I mentioned is a light kicker and easy shooting.

BJM like Quickdtoo said; You might want to think about a recoil pad with the "hotter" loads. Got a Limbsaver slip-on on my Buffalo classic but have it kinda hid.
Haven't regretted putting it on at all.

I've only got the 1 but I'm sure you could look at photos of Quickdtoo's and it will make you drool. You're just going to have to "officially" join the club!
