Hornet loads

dHey guys, I just got a new 22 hornet handi and cant find a whole lot of load data for it. What kind of loads do you other hornet shooters use?  I have several brands and kinds of powder. Thanks in advance.

Check out Hogdon's annuall reloading manual... They've got a great section on hornet loads.. Since you'e not gonna be using a lot of powder you can take your time and work up a sweet load in different weight and styles of bullets.. I made up 2 so far, one in 35 vmax's and another in 50 grn sp's, both of which were under .5" at 100 yds... Both loads I might add were with Li'l gun ...

If you look at Tim's link to Hodgdon's Lil'Gun loads, you'll notice the W-W case uses the same load for 35 gr or 45 gr.  I believe you'll find it's a case full of Lil'Gun.  The same situation exists with a R-P case, but it holds more powder.  I use 13.5 gr of Lil'Gun in R-P cases with a 40 gr V-Max.  :)

I've had a couple of Hornets that responded well to using small pistol primers instead of small rifle primers.

yep ive used sp primers  at  different times, they work great, in some loads, i usually stick with cci bench rest primers, in all my small rifle think they are a buck or so more then standard? may just be a mental thing ( as  wit ha few think i have ) hahahah but  they work for me ,ill tell yu i bought 4 boxes of speer bullets a few years back , clearence on them they were 46 gr  flat point bullets they were made  for the 218 when marlin had the lever guns  chambered for the 218 bee, and those puppies shot great out of all my hornets, they were a soft pointed flat point , bullet 46gr , ??

You will enjoy the hornet and its cheap to play around with.I've had a couple for years with one in handi rifle.I never liked the 35gr,it shot great,just had too many blow up on groundhogs and would require another shot.They do work great on crows and blue jays.So I settled on either 40gr v-max or ballistic tip.For powders ww 296 did best in mine,and lil'gun was just as good.Best of luck to ya and have fun!

Thank you all much. You have all mentioned the one powder I dont have on hand. I will be getting some lil gun and will try it. Will have a range report when the weather gets better and I can get to the raange.

DW06, I have some WW296 on hand, what were you favorite loads using it in your .22 Hornet? What were your starting and max loadings for both 35 and 40 grain bullets and which shot best out of your gun? Was it a Handi? Did you use rifle or pistol primers?...Thanks very much for this info....<><.... :)

 I'm another one for LILGUN and 35 grain Vmax. I really like the idea of good velocity and low pressures. I'm gonna try to work up a 40 grain Ballistc Tip load with this powder too.
