Handier Handi!
« on: January 07, 2007, 09:44:12 AM »
Hey all, picked this up a while back and goofing off in the basement.  It's a 45-70 barrel trimmed up topped off with a williams sight.  I realize the short barrel doesn't use the full potential of the 45-70 but should be fun for some light handloads.  Cool though, huh?

Haven't shot it yet, rest assured there will be plenty of lead in the stock though ;)

It measures a whopping 16.5" which is the shortest it can be and still legal I believe.

It's almost cute, ya know, in a black rifle sorta way!!! ;D Nice loooong sight radius, but it should be fun!! :D You can always put a WGRS on it and still be light(with the lead??  ???) and handi!!

Man talk about a great light weight woods gun...it's perfect. Very cool 8)
All ya need is a sling and a nylon slip on ammo carrier, and your set.
Can't wait for a range report.

Here's something along the same lines though the buy-now price a tad steep:

A Buffalo Classic stock set would look good on that short barreled hammer.

Let us know how it shoots, I am toying with the idea of doing the same thing except with the reciever sight.  Now that I have seen what it will look like, I am even more interested, I just can't decide between the 45/70 and the 308.  I would use it as a treestand/blind/shooting box rifle as well as a walking rifle.  Where I hunt the shots rarely reach 100 yards so either one is adequate.  I am kind of leaning towards the 45/70 because if I use the 308, I'll be tempted to scope it just in case I needed to take a longer shot and thus would give up some of the handiness of the handi rifle.

I've been thinking of doing that with my 500. I already put the factory sight off my BC on it and love how quick and handy the rear peep is with the fiber optic front. Couple that with a 16" barrel and it would be a cool, quick handling rifle just as your is.

Very nice looking, be sure to let us know how it shoots.
