Medium 500 S&W loads?
« on: January 06, 2007, 05:06:40 AM »
I am looking for a medium load that is between the 10 grains of Unique and 35-40 grains of H100 for my 440 grain lead GC bullets.  Any experience guys?

Try to get one of the guys to send you the John Taffarin article on the 500 sw.
He mentioned a load just like that one useing Unique.

I really like the Unique load, but it is like throwing a shotput and the H110 load would stop a buffalo. Out of a Handi, it is fierce on both ends.  I have a 3x-9x Nikon on mine and have it mounted as far forward as possible.....with the H110 loads, DON'T CRAWL THE STOCK!

Must of mistook the orginal post.

Each to his own but I'm trying to think of something that I would not shoot with a 440gr 50 cal bullet moving  at 900-1000fps in a 50yd or closer shot . Moose, elk, all kinds of deer, black bear, and hogs.
And if a 2 1/2 in barrel in a 454 or 44 mag is good for bear protection then the 50 would work on them.

But on the other hand tinkering with loads is fun as well.

Titegroup powder looks like the best compromise but like you said...there is nothing that wouldn't fall to 440 grains at 900-1000 fps...

A few years ago anything that shot like that from a handgun was taken to Africa to kill something huge and dangerous.
