After reading all these posts and getting advice I got myself a .243 today at Cabelas. $219 minus the $45 for opening up a charge account there. Naturally I spent that in other stuff- ammo, case, etc.

My next step after cleaning and sighting in with a Nikon Prostaff, will be to find a 20ga. barrel with choke tubes because this is to be my wife's turkey gun this spring. Meanwhile I will have fun with it on coyotes and hogs hopefully.

then again if I find another handi already set up that way....

Does that 243s buttstock have a high comb on it? If so, please be advised that some have had an issue when trying to use a shotgun barrel with the high combs.

not really high like a montecarlo stock but not a straight stock either- very crude estimate 1/8-1/4 " maybe?

what is the problem with mounting the 20ga. barrel to this receiver?

The problem comes from the comb of the stock being to high to see down the barrel properly and you end up shooting way to high .

anything I can do about that short of changing stocks? for my purpose I am going to have to use some kind of scope on that for turkeys anyway, so how will that be affected by the height of the stock comb?

If you are going to put a scope on the shotgun barrel it should be fine if you can find a smith to put a mount on a shotgun barrel

that is what I thought, I can't be the first to want to do that. with a scope even a red dot, it should be fine for turkeys.

No problem for most smiths to drill and tap a 20 gauge barrel. Just order the NEF factory weaver rail when you get the 20 gauge barrel.

Thanks gimphunter I knew it could be done.
Ideally I would like a 20 ga. barrel that could be fitted with a choke for turkey but I dont see that on the 2005 accessory barrel list. Do you know if that is possible? If not, I may have to settle for a full choke 20 ga. barrel, but I already have one by Stevens so that would be a waste.

There is one on the list:

S03344     20 Ga., 28" Vent rib, Screw-in choke (Mod)     $79.00

You can also get the 22" choke tube barrel from the 20 Ga Youth model Pardner (SB1-25C).  For turkeys with a 20 gauge, that's the one I'd want. It's not on the list., so you'll have to ask customer service how to order it.

With either barrel, I'd order without the choke tube. That should save you around $20, and you can use that to buy a better choke tube than you'll get from the factory.

Thanks for those part numbers, Gimphunter. Funny neither of them was on the 2005 sheet they sent with the rifle. I will get the SB1-25C without the choke tube, which should take care of it for me.

I meant to note that the SB1-25C is the whole gun - the 20 gauge youth pardner with choke tubes. I don't know what the number is for just the barrel, but I did ask customer service a while back, and they will sell you that barrel even though it's not on the accessory barrel list.
