Model 40 groups
« on: January 08, 2007, 04:58:36 PM »
Hi guys, and gals,
and compliments of the season to all Savage owners.

I managed to get out over my holiday break and put a few rounds through my M40 Hornet, test some factory ammo, and try a few loads.

I was very satisfied with the results, although the East European factory stuff mostly left a lot to be desired,
struggling to get it under a minute. (45gr Sp going pretty slow !)

I tried some Lil'gun with small pistol primers, and was pleasantly surprised, especially with the 40gr Nosler, seated out to an OAL of 1.840 . My best group of .35" at 100mtrs.
I haven't been able to do that with the previous two Hornets that I have owned, and haven't seen a Hornet shoot that well in this neck of the woods,
so, well done Savage.
Here's my Nosler groups. Shame about putting one out of the bunch, but shows there's room for improvement in my bench technique off the bags,
and I have a 4-16 Tasco HC on High rings mounted.
(35gr Hornady groups to follow)
cheers,
Sean in 'Godzone'

I also put through some Hornady 35gr V-Max factory loads, which were encouraging,
consistently shooting under a minute.

I tried a couple loads with ADI 2205 powder (4277 equivalent) with small rifle primers,
and also the magic Lil'gun using small pistol primers.

Again, good results, but probably not quite as good as the Nosler 40grBallistic Tips.

Here's the targets,
again, shame about putting one out of a .2" group of 4 shots at 100mtrs.

My trigger technique still has a bit to be desired with the 2.5 lb Accutrigger.
Trigger is crisp, though, and no creep. You just have to keep your concentration levels up.
Bit difficult sometimes for an old bugger like me !

Anyway, love the Savage Model 40 .22 Hornet.
It just gets better !

cheers,
