Dilemma With Sabot plastics.....
« on: January 02, 2007, 11:49:55 AM »
The Sabot plastics that came with the Package of Hornady 250 grain SST's allow the Bullet to set fulley in the sabot jacket and not flare out the sides...

Now on the other hand I bought 50 of them Knight brand black sabot jackets and the .45 caliber 230 grain jacketed hollow points don't fit in them at all.. Is there such as a thicker wall on Sabot plastics?

As I can drop the .45 caliber hollow point bullet in the Hornady Sabot sleeve and it sets Correctly ....

Is there a Different Brand Plastic Sabot I should be Using with these 230 grain Seirra jacketed Hollow points...

If need be all I can get you Pics and upload them to Post and show exactly what I mean, as my wording might not be the best to Discrib exactly the issue....

As them Knight Sabot plastic with either Bullet Load hard as heck for me.....

Thanks and let me know if Pics would be helpful...

pics to show the space between the base of the sabot sleeve and the bullet sets High in the sabot jacket... so as I push the tip of the bullet with just my thumb the plastic fins press outwords.....If in the Plastic sabot on the Right in all pics.. It's a Knight brand and shorter  then the Hornady Sabot plastic....

Shows here  on the left a Hornady 250 grain SST with the Correct Sabot sleeve it was packaged with. and the Sabot sleeve on the right is a knight brand and the Bullet a sierra .4515 (230 grains JHP )

In this Pic, I switched the Bullets ..and the same Resolts.. the sabot sleeve to the right with either bullet wouldn't set all the way in the plastic.. Has same space as the 230 grain in the plastic unit.

packages of the knight sabots and the bullet box I bought and was told they would work together...

Sabots come in different thicknesses.
Contact MMP and tell them about your problem; I bet they have a sabot that will work.

Those Knight sabots was all that the two local gun shops had ...

a friend told me that lukes gun shop which is about a mile away from where I work Might have some yet,as he bought his there for his smokeless and TC Muzzle loader....

He is switching from 303 grain down to the 250 grain SST hornady's......

Sabots come in different sizes, you order them for the caliber of the bullet you use. 44, 45 etc.  A 45 caliber bullet will not fit a 44 caliber sabot.

RedHawk, I agree.. the .45 caliber bullets won't work in them .451-.452 sabots ...... the Bullet seems to have a wide base or the sabot deep inside has a narrower edge so it won't set no matter what I do...

The Third Picture down doesn't show it, But there is that same amount of air space under that .45 caliber Hornady Red tipped Bullet as it did when I had that .45 caliber sierra in it.

So I have some sabots I can't use, without lots of force to load them for sure...

I'll search the muzzle loading sites for some different sabots...

Also you might want to try HARVESTER black sabots and the Harvester crush rib black sabots as they will load easier as well as seat the bullet the right way.
You can get them at Cabelas, Also do a search for the harvester web site and you can find other places that sell them.

Some sabots are made for the new TMZ / Spitfire type bullets from Barnes. The bullet has a slight  boat tail. I have seen MMP sabots designed for this type of bullet. A bullet with a flat base will not seat.   May be the issue. Knight sales alot of Barnes.

TwoBear, thanks a Bunch thats a idea I can check into further....

Slave, that is the Trouble with these sabots... the Bullets I have are Not Boat tailed and that is exactly what is happening.. the flat tail is to blunt and wide and not tappered..

I run out of ordering funds, But will be after some of them MMP and other Sabot sleeves...

Scottie,

Dont burn yourself up in the first month. This can be a life long search.

I highly recomend placeing an order through Barnes for some of the TMZ, Spitfire and MZ bullets. They will come with the proper SABOT for that bullet. They are also made from the latest revesion in plastics by MMP.

I would also purchase some of 275gr XPB bullets. For them you will require the MMP HP12 and or HP24 sabot. These two Sabots are designed for .451 bullets. One is just .002 larger than the other. My Encore has repeadtedly produced the best group with the tightest fit I could cram down the bore. If you have or wish to buy bulk .451 bullets with a flat base you should have both of the sabots listed above to deturmine which is correct for your gun.  They can be purchased from MMP.

keep your powder dry !!!

Slave, today I ran up to Lukes gun shop which is about 3 miles away... He had the MMP and the Harvester Sabots... the MMP's did the same as the Knight sabots when I would seat a bullet in it...

The Harvester on the other hand fit these like a glove... So I picked up two packs of the Harvester sabots... And some Rusty Duck Bore Cleaner.. as he doesn't have any TC cleaner, solvent at all.. He said that he has tried and still uses Ammonia to clean his bores and a fine mist on the bore and wood with all his Muzzle loaders...

He said he would take a few patches and soak them in Ammonia, then place one on the bore and push it threw and clean it with about 4 passes..... I asked after how many shots.. and he said about 10 shots...he said after he cleans the bore with ammonia,he then adds some bore butter on a patch and runs it down the bore and leaves it till he is ready to use that weapon again.. Or till mid summer when he will get the itch to go threw and clean all his firearms....

I have always wondered about the spray in the bore foam up stuff that bubbles and activates to clean the powder and such left in the barrel.. But I have yet to Find it local.. and hate to wait and wait on shipping...

But I may just have to...

Anyhow, I got the sabot issue worked out, Now to Just get out and fire off a few more rounds... as that trigger finger itch never dies... Even with age ......

Take care all and thanks for the Idea's on some sabots and such....

Many muzzle loader shooters use Windex to clean their rifle bores. Others use a 50/50 mix of Windsheild fluid and rubbing alcohol. I use the windex at home and the rubbing alcohol straight at the range on damp patches to swab between shots.

AlleyYooper, do ya use a small spray bottle and spray a couple patches while at the range? Or soak a few patches in a small jar with alcohol on them?

seems simple to clean between shots and get me dialed in on targets...
