bore / gun cleaner for Muzzle loaders
« on: January 08, 2007, 04:08:51 PM »
I was at a different gun shop today located In Bath N.Y... and the guy there told me what he uses to clean the bore in muzzle loaders and all guns he has in the shop...

It's called ( Gun Treatment) Does all Three- Cleans,Lubricates and Protects ...Brand is G 96 ..It's a Black and Yellow Spray can...

I sprayed a small dot on a rusty steel target plate about the size of a dime and rubbed it in with a finger and it was still coated hours later.... He said all he does it spray it straight down the bore, allow it to set for just a Minute and then run a few clean patches down the bore till the last one comes out clean.... Next he will spray a small amount onto a patch and run it up and down in the bore a few times and put the gun away for season.... He said it works also on the outside of the bore  with a small cloth.....

He didn't have any TC cleaning gear other then Bore Butter..so I picked up a tube of Bore Butter just to have on hand, and also a can of #11 caps for the TC Scout.... As I am sure I will be out saturday with my older brother and take out the tc's for some plinking.. I will be welding some chain to my 3/8" thick by 12"x12" steel plate so we have a Target that hangs and will add some sound at 100 and 150 yard shots.....

I was also told to Just take the barrels off the guns and place them in the bath tub with hot soupy water....... I have to try it yet... and clean and dry it totally before coating with oil and such and adding new gorilla's grease to the breech plug and such....

Take care all

Never tried Gun Treatment. But I do use that bore butter all the time. It seasons the barrel and I never have a problem loading sabots, even after 5 or 6 shots without swabbing between shots. My muzzleloader's and Shiloh Sharps all have bore butter in the barrel while they sit in my gun safe.

Be careful cleaning the Scout as the breechplug and pressure relief holes are a little difficult to get all the cleaner out of after soaking in a tub. Plan on using come compressed air to get the stuff out of the false chamber between the "breechplug-nipple" thing and the two relief holes. There is not really a breechplug as the back of the barrel is solid except for the hole to the rear and the chamber between the barrel and the nipple plug. I had a scout and traded it for a newer style just because the design was a little strange. It shot OK though but I understand the 54 cal ones were not such good shooters.
