New BP shooter w/???
« on: June 05, 2003, 03:18:26 PM »
Not new to handgun shooting but have never loaded or fired black powder before.  I have been looking for a good deal on a revolver and  I finally picked up a Ruger Old Army in a trade and want to shoot it but not sure what works best as far as supplies.  What's a good start for clean accurate powder, balls, wads etc?  Is there a site that has a good overview of loading and cleaning?  Any help ya'll can give I'll appreciate.

Be true to your name and scroll down through the posts and read them.  You will find a plethora of information here on this site.

Any of the Ventureno books on Black Power shooting should include basic information on shooting C&B as well.

Happy scrolling!

Hey shrink,
This much I've figured out myself and have been reading.  Would like someone experienced, especially with powder and their differences, to help me understand the basic differences.  I went to one store at lunch Thursday but salesman wasn't interested in spending a few minutes to describe differences about powders just put one on the counter and said this is what you need.  When I asked he didn't shoot bp himself.  I should have a break Saturday to go to another store but would like a better understanding myself what I'm after first.
Thanks,
Dennis

Welcome to the fold...  You need roundballs from Speer or Hornady (or Warren) in 457 diameter.  You need Remington #10 percussion caps.  You need a lube like Bore Butter.  Suggest 45 Caliber Ox-Yoke Wonder Wads.  A capper, snail type or in-line is handier than using your fingers to cap.  A snail type will hold a whole can-ful of caps.  If your Ruger came with a nipple wrench it also has a blade on one end for turning your cylinder pin and rammer lock.  If not you need one, or a screwdriver and a 3/16 inch socket driver for the nipples, so you can remove them for cleaning, etc.  You need a powder flask with spout for 30 grains of powder, and spare spouts for 25 and 35, even 40.  Of course, you need 3fg Black Powder, GOEX if you can find it. Alternates are Pyrodex, which is a form of black powder, Cleanshot which is smokey but not smelly, and dot as corrosive, and Hogdon's 777 which is very much cleaner, also smokey, easier to clean, but stronger.  a 35gr charge of 777 is a serious load.  Incidently, ONLY black powder really weighs (close) to the powder settings of a measure.  Pyrodex, Cleanshot and 777 must be measured by volume, not actual weight. Hogdon does have a chart on Pyrodex, a weight factor of 1.33.  Lots of books and articles on the loading and shooting of black.  Lyman has a good manual.  Go to Ruger's website and download or order the Old Army Manual.

Thanks Flint... I downloaded and printed Ruger Manual (40 pages!) and have been going over it.  It's a great help, thanks again.  I going to take some time tomorrow and gather the supplies from one of the local owned gun shops here that I was told do a lot of bp stuff.  Non of my buddy's are bp shooters or I'd take one out with me to get started.  Haven't taken the time to actually stop and shoot for nearly a year and I've really been stirred try the bp for awhile and I really like this Ruger... my kind of gun.  My Dad taught me hunting but my deep love of SA's in general and 1st Gen Colt SAA's in particular was kindled by my Grandad.  He never hunted or fished with me like my Dad but I would spend most of my summers with him and we would shoot the two Colt SAA's he owned almost daily.  God knows how he loved those guns.
Sorry for the digression but thanks yet again for the help!
