Help. Mosin headspace
« on: January 10, 2007, 09:21:40 PM »
I need help with measuring headspace on a Mosin Nagant without the use of guages.  I read a post some time back (not sure if on Greybeard or somewhere else) about measuring headspace with a lead disk and a dial caliper (measuring the compressed thickness after closing the bolt).  Anyone familiar with the procedure or where I can find the post (article?).  I tried doing a search here, but I keep getting an error message saying I am not authorized to search this forum.  Any help will be appreciated.

I have never tried it, but you could put a blob of Playdo on the head of the cartridge and close the bolt. Or cut up some feeler gages and place them on the head and close the action.  Neither will give as good a reading as a headspace gage, but will give you a rough idea.

Being a rimmed cartridge, the Mosin head spaces on the rim not the shoulder. All the hype of head spacing a Mosin is not well advised.Fire the weapon, remotely if you wish, and examine the fired shell. If there are no problems such as bulged case then give it no further thought.

The mosin nagant headspace is checked by a washer that is thicker than the rim on the standard mosin case.  The washer is the same diameter as the case rim too.  If you go to gunboards.com the guys there will give you the exact thickness of the mosin headspace gage.
