Skinning Your Animals

I am a trapper as you can probably tell by my name. I was browsing through this forum admiring some of the pics yal have posted. And I got curious. Do any of yal skin your animals to sell or tan or for whatever reason?

I skin my bobcats and coyotes and have a friend that scrapes and stretches for me. We then ship our fur at the end of the season. Don't make much but hate to see the fur go to waste.

I live in NE kansas and see a lot of coyotes, bobcats. would like to start varmint hunting but don't just want to leave them lie.  The local guy around here that used to buy fur has gone.  I don't want to skin, I don't think I would be good at it.  anybody hear of a fur buyer around here I could take carcus to>

Anyone that traps would gladly take the full carcass off of your hands, unless you shot it to pieces. You might even hire the same guy for a few bucks to skin it for you.

I skin coyotes if the pelt is any good, the past few years around here have had warm winters and the coyotes seem to shed real bad so that thick undercoat is kind of patchy, I've also shot a couple with mange the past couple of years.  I figure skinning a few animals every year is good practice for wilderness hunts, where you have a big animal down and need to get it skinned and out of the field quickly.

I will skin all of them & usually sell them local to a guy who shows up at a designated place a couple times a month. Sometimes I will throw my lot in with a local trapper to sell for me.
Not Much money as you know but that doesnt matter as I am into it for the calling.

Gentlemen,

My days of skinning the nasty things are over, Would not mind skinning a Bob cat or even a fox But, After trapping for years on top of calling, looking back i would guess i done a couple thousand animals at least, If you want a challenge try your hand at skinning a beaver, when i first started trapping beaver i messed up more beaver pelts. Finally this Game warden i knew came to the house and saw the mess i had made, i thought he was going to bust a gut laughing and finally he sat down and showed me the tricks of the trade. In the early sixties the good money was in beavers. OK now i will shut up..........Joe..........

For a good lesson in humility, everyone ought to skin at least one beaver.

Sounds like you have been there done that. A person hasn't done any thing until he skins a beaver, I was afraid i would get slammed for this post but maybe they will have a little mercy on a poor old man. Thanks for the come back......Joe.......
