7x30 waters , no more sierra 130 gr. ??
« on: January 14, 2007, 01:48:12 PM »
Does anyone no for sure if sierra dropped the 130 gr. single shot pistol  bullet , I heard that maybe they have , and my 06 chart doesn't list it , but there website does ??? I haven't been using it but know many that like it  , I have had a hard time deciding which bullet to use and haven't gotten the chance to shoot any deer yet. I always thought the 120 grainers could be a little on the light side and went with the 140 gr. nosler ballistic tips for more penetration , but maybe there made for faster velocitys out of the 7mm and won't expand at all !!! Just got to thinking that the sierra 130 gr.might be just right weight wise  and now I hear that they might have been dropped!!! I also loaded up some 140 gr. nosler partitions as bear is in with deer in PA for 2 or 3 days . So whats everyones take on this and what bullets have you shot deer with ??   (  I am using a 23 '' bbl. )

It's my understanding they no longer manufacture single shot pistol bullets. I've heard this from several sources. I have less than fifty rounds left with this bullet, so I guess I'll have to come up with something else. :'(

It's the only bullet I've used for the Waters for over 20 years now I guess and yes it's definitely been discontinued and Sierra has none in stock. It's been gone from their list for 2-3 years I was told when I called about it. They can't even tell you a distributor who might have any, I asked.

I have no clue what I'll go to with it gone. Most like either the 120 or 140 Nosler BT. I have used the 120 BT and it works but is a bit lighter than I prefer. The 140 is really a bit too heavy for the shorter handgun barrels in my opinion and you can't get adequate velocity at safe pressures with it for it to expand out to the maximum distance of the Waters.

The Sierra bullet was the absolute best bullet out there for it. I'd sure like to get my hands on a few hundred of them.

Too bad it was the only bullet for 'hunting' back on my first go around with the 7-30.

I just got a new carbine length Waters and haven't even decided what I want to start out with.
I may try some Barnes bullets in 120 gr. TSX....they worked excellent in my 6mm at 85 gr.

Greybeard , I was looking at the speer bullets and they make two 130 gr. bullets , one is what they call there( hot core) spitzer and a boattail spitzer one has a little thicker jacket than the other , have you or anyone else ever look into them  ? It just seems like the 120's are a little light for penetration  and the 140's a little heavy for good velocity !! Wish there was a 130 gr. nosler BT!!! tHEY JUST SHOOT sooo GOOD !!!!
