Searching GBO
« on: January 11, 2007, 07:25:58 PM »
We've added the Google search back to the Forums Index Page. Use it for searching the GBO site for now. It seems to have completed the processing of the site and it appears that all results you get back will now open. We were having some limited problems with that before but it seems to have cured itself and is now returning only good results you can view.

What's the plan for the native search process?

It's looking less and less likely Matt is going to be able to get it up and running unless the folks in charge of the software make major changes and give us a better program to work with. In his last few tries he got to less than 20% completion of the indexing before it stopped and started over. He was getting as far as 80% but can't get nearly that far at this time.

The Google Search should provide just as good a result as the built in one would if working as long as you chose the search GBO option. It even has the benefit of increasing GBO income when it's used which is a side effect of the necessity to use it but a nice side effect.

We're not giving up on getting the search feature to work but at this time Matt's just not having any success in making it happen. Really what he is trying to do Google has already done and his efforts merely duplicate theirs. They are a lot better set up to do it than we are.

While Google seems to get the more recent posts, it seems to not get those farther back than http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/smf/index.php/board,88.360.html.

Undertstand, we'll continue to work on indexing it but Matt has put at least 200 hours into it so far and is still where he started. At some point he will have to write it off as a lost cause I suspect altho he is a stubborn rascal and hates to admit something has bested him when related to computers.
