Front sight dovetail way too loose
« on: July 02, 2007, 04:23:39 PM »

I bought the XS peep sights for my BLR and although I like the rear peep the front sight has a problem. The sight is way too loose for the dovetail.

I'm thinking if I put the sight upside down in a vice and tap with the punch lightly (where red arrows are) it should do the trick. I could also tap down the top edges of the dovetail base ever so lightly too. But those marks will be visible...not that I care alot since the gun already has plenty of scratches, dings, and gouges.

Any other idea's out there?

I stake dovetails, offset barrel material into the dovetail with a punch.

If you put a shim under the sight dovetail it will tighten it right up, start with an aluminum soda can or piece of feeler gauge.  Larry

Use  centerpunch to raise several craters inside the barrel dovetail, on the floor of the cut.

I that isn't enough, small brass shims can be cut from the sidewall of a large straight-walled cartridge case, like a .45-70 or .44mag(with diagonal cutting pliers), and slid under the male sight dovetail as you work it into the slot with the sight pusher tool (hopefully).
If a bright edge shows after installation, it can be camoflaged (on a blued gun) with a felt-tip marking pen.
