I'm an electrical engineer that spends all day calculating stuff to give the military the ability to make way bigger booms than most of use will ever make, so when I made my "nano-cannon", I just chucked the unthreaded portion of a 3/8 inch grade 5 bolt into my drill press and figured it out as I went.
It was pretty relaxing doing it that way.... Worst case senareo, I was looking at about 75 cents in materials down the tubes.
