Barrel life
« on: January 08, 2007, 02:24:36 PM »
My No4 MK2 after a good cleaning and alittle load development has proven to be a superb shooter. The rifle was in unissued condition when I bought her and I'm curious to know if there is a general idea of the expected barrel life? I shoot MK7 equivelent handloads .Those of you out there with Enfields, How many rounds have you got through them? My barrel is a 5 groove and when I slugged her I came up with a measurement of .307" from top of land to bottom of groove. My 100 yard 3 shot groups are consistently in the 1 1/4- 1 1/2 inch range for 3 shots slow fire. I've heard that you can get 5-7000 rounds from a .30-06 before accuracy begins to fall off and I'm wondering how the lower pressured .303 compares.    Thanks for the input.

I have heard that the barrell life on any military rifle should be in the neighborhood of 10,000 rounds.
The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa.

45/70..it's almost a religion.

With modern powders, moderate loads and good care it will most likely last until firearms
are outlawed in this country!

Shoot lower powered cast loads and that barrel will last a very long time.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

All you guys are correct its moderate loads and shooting cast bullets it will last forever or at least until Hillary comes after them....S.Sumner you are so right all the time!!

Shooting the max loads tends to open up the throats first. Get a good cleaning rod with the brass guide too so the crown will not be damaged too.  I worry more about the cleaning rod than me shooting out the barrel.

I have heard rumors of guys with sks's and ak's shooting the heck out of them way past 50k rounds. I think shooting the corrosive ammo and improper cleaning is at fault too. It also depends on how the climate and how your guns are  stored were you live too.  I put away a gun after shooting it with corrosive ammo for over a year.  I forgot to clean the last rifle and i was tired that night.  After opening up the safe i suddenly remembered while looking at it that i forget to clean it.  I was lucky that my safe is in a temperature controlled room. I cleaned the bore and its perfect.  It was a good test by accident.
