Hunter Super Blackhawk
« on: January 26, 2007, 11:20:37 AM »
I have a Super Blackhawk Hunter in .44 mag (Stainless-Bisley Grip), and would like to have a gold bead front sight and a v-knotch rear like the one is available for the Super Redhawk as listed in the Ruger catalog.  Any suggestions?

I'd think somebody should have something available to suit your wants.  At most a trip to Clements would take care of it.

don't do it!   it seems to me that the standard blade up front in a standard square notch in the rear provides the best possible sight picture for target work, and therefore for harvesting game at whatever range is reasonable.    that's probably why Elmer Keith and Jack O'Connor both (unknowingly?) agreed that such sights were the best for both Elmer's handguns and Jack's rifles.

Jack O'Connor is the one who put it into print, if i remember correctly, that such a set of sights offered the best possible aiming device for a firearm.    Elmer modified his front sight with a couple of gold lines cut into the back of the sight for use when he needed further elevation for greater ranges.   you can read about Elmer's set-up in various reference works.

take care,

Norse,

I handled a .17HRM Hunter last week that had this same style sight arrangement. I liked it and have considred having it done to my Blackhawk. To me, the sights seemed to line up better and faster than the standard set up. 'course this may just be my eyes reminding me of a neded trip to the eye doctor!
A friend of mine has done this same thing to 3 BHs, for others, and they've loved the improvements. I tyhink he's been getting the sights from Brownells. The BHs he worked on were the blued versions and he had to mill out the front sight ramp to install the gold bead and post. Most of the Stainless ones have a pin thru the sight base. You may contact Ruger to see if one's available.
