.375 Ultra Mag ?
« on: December 16, 2005, 08:15:15 AM »
Hello from Georgia,
I recently saw a Remington .375 Ultra Mag sold at a gun auction and was curious as to the actual performance. I have seen some ballistics that show a 300 gr. bullet pushed at 2845 fps. and this is simply AWESOME ! The muzzle energy is shown in excess of 5000 ft. lbs. ! I would like to hear from anyone who has either shot this round at the range or especially at a live target. I have no intention of getting one but with capabilities like that I do find it quite intriguing ! Thanks.

I have a Rem 700 in LSS.  @6 inch barrel.  Unfornunatly I have not shot anything with it.  You are correct with a 26 inch barrel 300gr you can get 2800 feet per second.  For Christmas I am getting chronograph so I will be able to tell you exact ballistics.  I love this caliber.  At one time a guy had posted where he a mutilated a whitetail deer.  If I remeber right it seems that it blew the rib cage almost off on the other side.   Made he will see this post and post the pictures again. :D

I have a Remington 700xcr in the 375 RUM, and have shot both the 300gr. Remington load and the 270gr. Remington load in this rifle with open sights. My rifle has a 24" barrel and weighs roughly 7-5/8lbs. I expected the recoil to be worse than it was but it was still enough to get my attention. There is quite a difference (in my opinion) in shooting the 270 grainers and 300 grainers. My shoulder was sore for a couple days after the 300 grainers, but was just fine a week later with the 270 grainers. My fiancee, (5'6, 125lbs-hope i got that right) shot it once with the 270 grainers and didn't bruise or feel too sore. As of now thats my extent of my experience with the 375 RUM, just punching paper, but it seems like its going to be an accurate rifle and not too heavy to carry around in the woods.

msorenso,

The recoil really isn't that much worse than my 673 Guide 350 mag. The 375 RUM rises more at the muzzle, but doesn't "kick" much worse.

Yeah I've been getting some snickers at work and from family for having such a large rifle but I love the rifle and cailber, and hope it makes me a great rifle. I really like the XCR format remington came out with. I'm really thinking about the 338 RUM now in either the impossible to find 700 LSS or the 700 XCR.

You seem to be one of the big supporters of the 375 RUM so I'd greatly appreciate you viewing my post in Optic Discussions when you find time. I'd like to hear what you think about scoping the 375 RUM.

thanks
JD

Jdenis,
Glad I can help, glad to hear you are a fan as well.  As for scope not to say this is the only to get but my choice would be a leupold VXIII in a 3.5-10 power.  Now most would suggest  lower power but I think since it shoots as flat as a 270, put a scope on it that you would use for a 270.  IMO I have a rifle with a 4 power scope and have shot things 25 feet  away with now problem.  i am thinking Iwould like the extra range viewing.  I guess it really depends on your application of use.  That would probably be best.
Funny to hear you have a 350 rem mag in 673 I do as well.  When first getting it it was heavier than i thought and kicked a little harder thna I expected for not having much more poer than a 30-06..  At least IMOP.  As for the 338 Rum I have one as well.  Recoils about the same, a little less when fired one after the other.  Yeah I get a few snickers as well but I guess I always love the most power of all things.  This doesn't mean i don't love the small stuff as well.  I guess I love it alll!!!! AHHH!  Anyway if I had anything to suggest - GET THE 338 Rum.  I have to admit they are a little tougher to find.  I happen to just stuble on one ina lcalshot that they had for a couple years and didn't think they would ever get rid of it.  of course when I saw it, it was about the time I was getting the RUM craze...  Its the only one I have seen. Maybe the gun auction would provide good luck for you.  i will check out the optic site soon..  good luck, let me know what you find... :D

My 2 go to rifles are now my Rem 700 BDL, stainless steel, 26" barrels, synthetic stocks, 300RUM and 375RUM.

I load 180gr Scirroco's @ 3380fps and 200gr A-Frames @ 3250fps in the 300RUM and 260gr Accubonds at 3020fps and 300gr Partition's @ 2750fps in the 375RUM.

Everything that I have shot with the 300RUM drops instantly with either bullet and I have only shot a moose with the 260gr 375Rum.

The fellow I was hunting with shot a huge bull moose wounding it but before it could run away I drilled it in the back of the neck at about 150 yards just as it was getting into the trees. Dropped on the spot with complete penetration from back to the front of the neck.

I have a Leupold VX111 4X-14X 40mm B/C reticle scope mounted on the 375Rum and a Leupold VariX 111 4X-14X 40mm A/O on the 300Rum.

Camp Cook,

Have you ever had a problem with the eye relief with the VX-III on your 375 RUM? (scope cuts or even close calls?)

Did you install a muzzle break on your 375?

I don't think I need one on mine but I just wanted to know what others are doing. I really like the 375 RUM with the limited amount of experience I have with it. I know its really overkill but I might use it deer hunting this fall.

I love hearing about the stories of shooting the RUMS..  I want to shoot moose a big bear with mine, all I need to do is get the hunt going.....
Not that I have experience with muzzel breaks but some of the guys with experinece with them, would probably  offer the advice to stay away..  From what I hear the blast fro mthem is really hard on hearing, causing damage to hearing... Correct me if I am wrong...
Camp Cook- tell more stries would love to hear them!!! :D

I bought mine (a 700BDL embelished)2 or 3 years ago when CDNN was blowing them out for $399.00or $499.00 can't remember the exact price .I can tell you that when I shot a bull elk with  it (through the sholder) at 125 yards it droped him on the spot and gave me a black and blue mark the size of a grapefruit . it kicks like a mule at both ends . bet it would be great for moose or a big griz .

375 RUM has some serious power for most anything on the planet.
It is on my want list, just need to get it to the need list!
I have a M700 LSS in 338 RUM and love it. Recoil isn't that bad after I had a Pachmyer DEcelerator pad installed. Stay away from the brakes. My buddy had a 300 RUM with the factory brake, noise and blast is intense.

I have only had a problem once with the scope smacking me in the forehead and that was when I was trying to shoot a grouse in the head @ about 100yards. I was shooting the 260gr Accubond @ 3020fps and I was resting the rifle across a log in front of me. I was so intenton putting the crosshairs dead on the neck that I forgot what rifle I was shooting and crowded the scope.   It was only a light tap on my forehead and didn't even break the skin.

I also load 300gr Nosler Partitions at 2750fps. I did load up to 2850fps but found that it was just a little to much recoil for me so I backed off to 2750fps.

I have chrono'ed the Rem factory 300gr A-frames and they average 2760fps in my 26" barreled rifle.

The best thing about my 2 different loads is that I have the 260gr bullets sighted in 2 inches high @ 200 yards and the 300gr bullets are dead on at the same distance. I average 2" groups @ 200 yards with both loads.

I just purchased my 375 RUM last year and the moose is the only animal that I have shot with it so far but plan on going after black bears in late April and May. So I'll post when/if I am successful.

260gr Nosler Accubond @ 3020fps from a Rem 700 BDL s/s 26" barrel Kick-Eez magnum recoil pad....

Here is a photo of my 300 and 375 RUM's, the top one is the 375 but only has a Leupold VariX 111 2.5X - 8X which I changed to a Leupold VX 111 4.5X - 14X B/C reticle a few weeks later and before my trips last fall.

msorenso, it was definately max for me due to the recoil in these light rifles and obviously with we owning both  the 300RUM and the 375RUM I have this thing about pushing bullets to their absolute safe maximum performance that is available at a reasonably price.

So with that said I could not safely as far as I am/was concerned go much faster than 2850fps. I am not recoil shy in anyway I am 6'3" and 215lbs and shoot these rifles and other heavy recoiling rifles and handguns a lot. I am one of the directors of British Columbia's largest gun club and basically have the use of the club whenever and as often as I want.

Can it be done maybe but I have no interest in trying.

The 260gr Accubonds @ 3020fps are also as far as I am concerned max loads.

I just pulled out my chrono record book to double check what 300gr loads I have worked up to.

Here is my final reload data for the 375 RUM and I only share this with the advise to reduce these loads by 15% and slowly and carefully work up to where you start to see pressure signs then back off. I have no pressure signs on any of my cases with these 2 loads.

260gr Accubond 103grs RL22 absolute max load that Alliant Powders told  me in a phone call to them.

300gr Partition 92grs IMR4350

I realize that you have no reason to I guess what i am asking is can you get them up to 2900 fps on 300 gr safely or is it too much????  As I have not gotten into reloading but soon will be what signs of excessive preesure do you  look for??

Sticky tight bolt lift or it is hard to pull the bolt back.

Inspect the primers for flattening out, also very deep firing pin impressions in the primer or no indent because the pressures pushed the indent back out.

Around the primer on the case you can start seeing a shiny dot from the bolt surface.

I understand what you asked about 2900fps I just can't give you an answer better than I have because I stopped due to the recoil being to heavy for me. Maybe if I installed a muzzle break or put my heavier LSS stock back on I could work up further but as of now "NO WAY" .......

I have one  from the Custom Shop at Remington. This is about as aswome a rifle as there is as far as I am concerned

What the specs  say is right on  .

Mine shoots 53and 1/2  inches low at 500 yards and about a foot high at under 100 yards.

I use it for everything I hunt here in Alaska from Caribou to huge Grizz nothing has ever took a second step they drop in their tracks.

Straight from the shop out of the box with open sights was very accurate,I have a fixed 6 power Burris Signature Series with quick detach mounts.

This isn't the gun for everyone but if you want to get the job done  and have a gun that pushes the lead further and faster with more down range knock down this is probably what you want.

If I gould bite the bullet and go stainless i would have another Ultra Mag but im to old fashioned I guess  and Remington for all I have herd only makes it in stainless now.
