1895 45/70 short barrel ?
« on: January 19, 2007, 03:07:58 PM »
I have a New England Handi in 45/70 and have thought about getting a Marlin 1895.  Is the short barrel of the guide gun a handi-cap in velocity or accuracy.

I know that the short barrel will reduce velocity, but is it that big of a deal with a 45/70

What kind of accuracy do you get with these?

Believe me you are not handicapped at all with a 18.5" barreled 1895 Guide Gun....  The 45-70 from mild to wild will put anything down in north america on two or four legs.

I've just bought a guide gun in 45-70 and have been working up handloads for it. I don't think I have ever had a rifle - lever, bolt, pump - shoot as consistently well with a variety of handloads. I've put about 120 rounds thru it, and I have already shot 7 or 8 3-shot groups (100 yd) that went 1" or less. This both with 300 & 350 grain bullets, 1-4x scope.

50 yards front rested my 1895GS does this with open sights and mid 40's eyes.

Velocity difference in 18.5" vs 22" in my marlins is only about 100 fps at loads in the 1400-1800 fps range.
