whats the longest shot?????
« on: December 30, 2006, 07:46:17 PM »
in my neck of the woods a 100 yards is a long shot usually.....i found a spot a few days ago that i just cant get to.......its 176 yards acording to the range finder.........we had a heated discussion on long range shooting here before....i dont want that again....but whats the longest shot you killed a deer with a huntsman.....im not saying i can make a shot this far.....but i usually hunt with my huntsman during rifle season.....plus i have been shooting h&r blackpowder rifles for 20 plus years....i go through 3 lb  of pryo in a year so i shot them quite a bit...plus our okla. deer are small usually about 100 # average....im just thinking about next year.....its a bow ..b.p. area only seen a few good one there so im just asking a question......whats your longest killing shot???????????thanks jb

Didn't have a chance to fire my huntsman at a deer this season :(, but a few years ago I shot a doe at 160y with a scoped 12ga using a sabot. I had a solid rest and the wind was less than 5 mph. I'm not a good enough marksman to ethically try it under different circumstances. A 50 cal shooting a heavier, well constructed sabot at 1800+fps would certainly be up to the task. At 200y lighter bullets may fall below the 1000fpe generally accepted as adequate for deer sized game.

170 yards, range finder verified, open field, perfect rest (straw bales), peep sight, 430 grain White Super Slug, 80 grains 777 FFFG (elk load), known trajectory, 15 minutes left of 2005 season, DRT.  :)  Previous longest shot was 110 yards, scope, 200 grain Shockwave, 100 grains BM'3, 50 yard recovery. All others were under 100.

A doe this season at 178yds in Food plot rangefinder read.  Using 285gr spitfire with 95grs T7 3f.  She went 60yds and it was a pass through.

I have not taken a shot over 125 yds.  But I can keep them on a paper plate at 200.  Shooting 240 grain Hornady with 150 fffg American Pioneer powder.  My woods is about 350yds from my house with deer usually right at the edge in the mornings,  I can only dream of sitting on the porch drinking coffee just waiting for the right shot.

I know this is a bit off-topic, but a couple responses indicated they use 777 FFFG. I have 2 lbs of 777 FFG. Is it because FFFG ignites better? Guess I should have read sie more before buying. I am trying to get different components to experiment with my Sidekick.

MikeC,

I use 777 FFFG when shooting slip-fit conicals, it promotes better obturation on upset because it spanks the bullet a little harder/faster. I use 777 FFG for all the saboted bullets and it works well with the conicals too. You will be just fine with the 777 FFG, and it is the recomended grade of powder.

Thanks Busta. I have a lot to learn about this. I am chomping at the bit to get to the range and play around a little with the Sidekick. I live in up state NY and for some reason we have this warm weather spell. Unfortunately, it is kind of the boonies and I have to get everything mail order. I hope it gets here before we return to the normal weather patterns.
