What's a 788 Worth?

A local dealer has a 788 in .30-30 with an extra synthetic stock.  It has scope bases and iron sights.  The condition is good with some finish wear.  I was wondering what it is worth, he wants $400.  It would replace an early Savage 340 that is not tapped for a scope and don't want to drill & tap it.  I'll probably let it go in trade if I can get good $ for it.

It is well worth that. The .30-30 and the .44 magnum are probably the two most scarce 788's made. I am seeing  decent .222, .243, and .308's going for that much or more.

The 788 has become a cult item, especially, as noted, in the rare calibres, so the value is what the traffic will bear.  The question is what is the rifle worth to you?  The 340 may have some collectors value also. 
Not a bad mark up for a rifle that first sold for $75-$80.

Thanks for the offer, but this one has a synthetic stock included and is local to me (Central New York) so there is no shipping between dealers involved.  If I can set up a trade, there will be no state tax either.

On the other hand, if you are close to me and want to do some trading, I'll consider.
