Author Topic: Brutal Recoil with 7mm-08 Stevens 200 (Read 3794 times)

Guys, this thing is brutal with all factory 140gr loads. My Handi-Rifle was no where near the recoil this thing generates. Maybe putting the Bull Barrel on this thing might help. Anyone else experience the same?

tac, I feel your pain. My Model 11 7-08 really gets my attention. In comparison, my Model 110 30-06 is a pleasure to shoot. I think the straight buttplate and different stock on the 11 explain this in my case along with lower weight. I suspect the fit and light weight also explains your problem. Heavier weight will help but make the rifle more burdensome to carry in the field. Consider putting a nice recoil pad on, this is worth the money and will tame the kick a lot. Also look at using a shoulder pad or a folded towel on your shoulder. These two in combination will make your 7-08 a delight to shoot at the bench. My son does this and can go through a box of rounds (he is rather recoil sensitive) w/ ease now as can I.

I recently purchased a model 14 in 7mm-08. It is the most inaccurate Savage I have ever owned! With Winchester 150 factory ammunition it shoots 4 to 6 inch groups at 100. Have been working for a week with handloads. The results have been disappointing to say the least. I have a Savage 99E in .308 that puts the Model 14 to shame as far as accuracy is concerned.

If 4"-6" groups are the best you're getting, I'd venture to say that you have a defective gun. Savages are known for their accuracy, and the 7-08 is no slouch on the range. I would waste any more time/bullets/powder on it, contact Savage about a possible warranty issue.

I have a Savage 11FL in 7mm-08 and shoot 120, 150, and 170 gr bullets out of it.
I notice heavier recoil with the 170 gr bullets but most 7mm-08 loads I'd describe as being on the moderate side.

BTW mine shoots pretty well (100 meter group):

Just joking (maybe) I have the exact same rifle in 7-08 and I do not even notice the recoil with 140's. In fact I don't think it has much recoil at all.

I was a warrior for the United States for 21 years, and a Civilian COP for since 1998. I know excessive recoil when I feel it. I'm wondering if bore diameter might be a little tight. I see no signs of pressure on the cases. Just to clear the air, I'm not upset about the WUSS thing. I found it kind of funny!

You may be on to something about bore diameter there. In the Handi 45-70's it makes quite a difference if the bore is a bit over or under-sized. I know the 7-08 is a smaller bore but I would think the principle would be the same.
Most gunsmiths will install after-market recoil pads for a nominal amount. One here will furnish and install either a G-2 or Decellarator for $45.
You might wanna contact Savage tho and explain the problem you're experiencing, it may well be a warranty issue also.
Might try slugging the bore also, just to know the dia. for sure.

I just picked up my Stevens 200 in 308. First thing I did was take the action off of the stock so that I could clean the barrel and action and CLR it, and file the rough spots off of the stock that would cut my tender fingers on recoil the first time I shoot the gun.

I need to get the scope and scope mounts for it, so I havn't shot it yet.

I have noticed that the "resin" stock is very light weight. I am sure this goes a long way towards the heavy felt recoil of the gun. One other item I have ordered is a Limbsaver recoil pad. I wont shoot the gun until I get this item installed. The factory recoil pad is pretty similar to a brick.

You may want to look at puttin on a real recoil pad, or even going to Boyds and mounting the action on a laminated stock. Those stocks have some real weight to 'em and will soak up a bunch of energy. The action is easy to take out. Two screws and the whole thing falls on the floor so be careful.

Just some thoughts.

Arn't you used to firing them little oh 223 thingys. You know that 7-08 is a whole lot more bullet and bang then them lit oh army bullets. :grin: You might just have a tight bore. Try cleaning it real good with some JB Paste or chrome paste and see what happens.

Dave, do you happen to have a scale that you can weigh that stock on? Mine is a heavy barrel version with the Choate stock and I've been curious how much it would weigh with a take-off stock mounted instead.

Hmmm, Well...I have a scale that may do the trick. I have to dig it out of the shelving unit.

Now, I can weigh the resin stock, and then I can weigh the one piece barrel and action, of course if you add 'um up it should be the total weight of the gun. So, if I give you the weight of the barrel\action, and you know the weight of your total rifle, then you should be able to do your math from there. Waite...your barrel is different than mine...scratch that.

Give me a day to find the %^$#@ scale.

I bought my son a Model 16 FCSS and.....Yes, it kicks like a mad mule!

I've shot a lot of rifles in various calibers over the years, but my son's 7mm-08 Model 16 definitely is unpleasant to shoot. In fact, I nearly cut my eye on the scope because of it!

My Ruger 7mm-08 on the other hand is a cream puff.

Why do these Savages kick so bad?

The reason for the felt recoil difference between the Ruger and the Savage is the total weight of the rifle.

On the Savage web site the total weight of the Model 16 with the synthetic stock is 6.5lb. On the Ruger web site they list the Model 77 Mark II Sporter with the laminated stock at 8lb.

That 1.5 lb of weight difference will make a big difference in felt recoil. You gotta figure, it's the same bullet in both guns pushing the same energy.

So, if you throw an aftermarket laminated stock on a Savage action and increase the weight, your going to get less felt recoil. (Either that or fill up that hollow synthetic factory stock with lead----but don't tell your chiropractor that you did that). Hey....no recoil then!!!

I finally shot my new .270 with 130's and was also surprised to feel the recoil. But it is a very light gun and I will put a Pachmayr on it ASAP.
I did run the recoil managed loads through it and they felt about like a .243 with 80 grainers. Very accurate. Less than an inch through a hot barrel.
I will have to trim the stock to add a thicker butt pad, but in the long run it will be worth the trouble for me, the wife and kids.

Hunt127 is correct about the weight of the synthetic stock, but here is some additional detail:

The synthetic stock itself weighs 1lb 11oz. The factory recoil pad weighs 2 oz, so the total package weighs 1lb 13oz.

Lead Poison, I'm glad someone else has experienced the same. By the way Stolivar, most of the time shouldered up on an M-60, or a M2BMG. The little .223 thingy was a back up gun for me. :blaster: I still luv ya man!

My 16 year old complained about his 270, wanted to quit after 7 shots. I put a Limbsaver on it, and now he's about to break me by shooting so much. My 11 year old even shoots it now. I think I'm going to do the baffy/epoxy/lead shot trick in the stock to get a little more weight, and balance it some.

Try filling up those syn stocks with resin. My hunting buddy and I did it to our shotguns and inlines. What a difference! I also installed an R3 pad (Limbsaver) on my supermag and it really and I mean really cut the recoil down with those corelock sabots. Before any comments I have shot a pre 64 model 70 375H&H, a 338 Alaskan (pre 64 also) and a service BAR (the real one if anyone remembers) so am well aware of recoil. Those new pads are a godsend, I believe Hogue has one for the syn Savage stock.

I'm 64+ and my 7-08 Stevens 200 isn't that bad to me at all, my 25-06 is a little more. I don't notice much difference between my Stevens 08 and my Handi bull barrel 08................

I've had several Savages all in 110 though, and every one kicked, and those I've known to have Savage's have always said they kick, but for the money they are also very accurate.

My son's Savage flcss .7-08 does not kick as much as my Ruger M 77 glass beded .308. Both are very comfortable to shoot to us especially compared to my friends Remington 30-06.
