10 or 12 inch twist in 30-06?
« on: January 01, 2007, 01:05:23 PM »
Most 30-06 rifles are offered  with a 10" twist, but I noticed that the CZ 550 American has a 12 inch twist.  Traditionally, the 12 inch twist was used in the 308.

Does anyone have any experience with the 12 inch'er in the 30-06?

A 1/12" twist in a .308 bore rifle would be great for  shooting bullets from 130 grain to 165 grian, but the heavier slugs won't stabilize in it.  For a hunter in the lower 48 that could work OK for a 1 rifle situation but probably not outstanding.

I've been shooting a Smith&Wesson (Husqvarna) 30-06 since 1970, a one-in-twelve twist.. shoots 180 gr lead core bullets inch and a quarter or better at 100 yds..   since I've never shot the longer 220s or any solid copper which would be longer for weight, I couldn't tell you..  CZ knows what they're doing.. JMHO... Les

Do you know what bullet weight you want to use? If it is under 180gr, it is will not matter. You can shoot 180's or should be able to if you are shooting loads with good velocity. I would not consider this barrel if you want to shoot bullets over 180gr. !65gr is perfect
for this barrel.

My Tikka .30-06 has a 1/11 twist.  It shoots very well with 165 grainers.  Rev
