There were three 13 inch mortar barrels ( stuck in the mud nose down) at Fort Mcnair in Washington DC untill a short while ago when some military officer decided to take one and ship it off to Fort Hamilton in New York to be cleaned up and put on display there. A frind of mine who is a military historian for the area suspects that one reason this mortar barrel was taken is the belief by those who wanted it that this was the actual Petersburg Dictar mortar. My historian friend always suspected this to be the actual Dictator but was never allowed to dig up the tube to see the numbers on the front to confirm anything.Maybe someone up there or visiting the fort can look at the mortar, which is supposedly now on display, and get the numbers?
By the way, there is a great collection of cannons on display at fort Mcnair and the Navy yard right near by!! Several 10 inch mortars on carriages as well! Very cool place to visit. I'd post pictures but since 911 they won't let you take pictures with out an escort and I haven't been able to arange that yet.

First of all, we really like Dominic's 1861 13" Seacoast Mortar a lot!  He does a fantastic job on the details and you guys know how we love the details!  Second, if you don't mind, Lance, we would like to expand on your "Cannon Sleuth" contest a little with some interesting and unusual cannons and locations we found on our trip through New York and New England recently.

Before we do, however we will have to get a promise from INTOODEEP that a family member will tie his hands behind his back and put a dull pencil in his mouth to slow down his GOOGLING!!!!!  He is too damn quick!!  ;) ;)  We will call the thread "Where are these cannon located?"  Maybe some hints will be given, we'll see.

Until tomorrow,

Tracy and Mike
Smokin' my pipe on the mountings, sniffin' the mornin'-cool,
I walks in my old brown gaiters along o' my old brown mule,
With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets
It's only the pick of the Army that handles the dear little pets - 'Tss! 'Tss!

Boy, you guys are tough.....  ;D  ;D  ;D But, I look forward to your posts.

P.S.- If I was to allow a family member to tie me up I'm sure they would just leave me that way....
