Sauer 44 mag?

Just ran across a Sauer -- Hawes SA in .44 mag.  The asking price is $200.  How well built are these?  I sorta miss my Super B Hawk, but not it's accuracy. Still have several hundred rounds of .44.  This is a fixed notch sight gun, some brass trigger gaurd etc.  The one thing it doesn't have is a 7 1/2 barrel which I would prefer.  It appears to be tight, and used only a little, maybe NRA 80%.

I would buy it just to have it. You dont see them very often. Might shoot like a champ!

like two dogs said you dont see many and for 200 bucks you dont see many 44mags. Id buy it.

I would not hesitate to buy it.  These were available in the '60s and '70s and were a rival to the Rugers at the time.  As you noted, they have more traditional fixed sights while the Ruger's of the time were adjustable.  They are a quality revolver.  These were built by Sauer & Sohn, which became Sig-Sauer and now just called Sig.  You may have heard of that company.  These guns have no transfer bar and should only be carried with 5 rounds and the hammer down over the empty chamber.  Buy it and enjoy it!  44 Man

Wnet back and looked harder.  The barrel is somewhat leaded and the real question is the 1 pound trigger--like something is broken or worn.  Not even sure this thing would stay cocked long enough to get on target.  Salesguy thinks it is a spring tightening job, I think maybe someone botched a trigger job.

probably right about the botched trigger job but a good gunsmith could recut that trigger and sear for a couple bucks. the leading i wouldnt worry about. Someone probably just shot soft bullets through it or was to lazy to clean it.

Or you could just replace the trigger.  These are still available on 'gun broker' for a reasonable price.  One thing to watch for is that the early guns had a smaller trigger screw (the part the goes through the trigger) than the later ones.  You will need the correct trigger.  Although I had to replace a trigger in an early one once and I believe I just used a Colt clone trigger (I believe a Uberti at the time).  That had a smaller hole and I had to just open it up a little to the correct size.  Not a big deal.  44 Man

I shot one that a friend owned, years back. Along a borrow pit, while on a job, building bridge cones, down near Kappa Il. Seemed to do the job, OK? I was pretty impressed with it.

A lot of the Hawes came with pretty light triggers from the factory. I had a 357 that brand new broke at around 3 lbs, after 20 years it was down to the point it was spooky, maybe pound and a half.
