I hate Wal-Mart ! The parking lot is full of carts, for the most part the staff are rude, apathetic and incompetant and the patrons seem to think that shopping cart operation is a contact sport. The children of said patrons run wild and look at you like you did something wrong when they run into you. One of the guys that works for me  working there part time at nights for the winter and loves it because he basically does nothing and gets paid for it. Don't even get me started on the illegal aliens that flock there by the hundreds to my local wallyworld. 15 at a time with their van with Pennsylvania plates. When they are done shopping they leave the 5 carts where ever they happen to land. I live in a shotgun only state and the sporting goods department has never even heard of an Ultra slug or tracker2. I hate'em. I HATE THEM. Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to give them my money because there just doesn't really seem to be a better option. We have a super walmart so I'll be swinging through the sporting goods even though my wife is sending me for groceries.

Bluebayou, I'm with you ..I have been an associate at Sam's Club for heading on 22 years.  I have seen alot of folks come and go..I have seen alot of folks head to greener pasture when a new business comes to town and months later they are wanting the old "crummy" job back.  I have personally met Mr. Sam about five times.I used to do alot of set-up of new warehouses and got to speak to him at those grand openings.  He used to use a Rem. 1100 in 28 gauge to quail hunti with, but had to go with the 20 in later years "cause he isn't as good as he used to be".

The company has changed since his departure..don't believe for a minute the Walton family is not involved in Wal-mart..too much money at stake not to be.

almost all of the negative press is generated by labor unions who are salivating to get in the door at Walmart!  The have their own offices..Walmart Watch..amazing there wasn't a Sears watch or a Grants Watch or a Woolco Watch..they can't run a business themselves, but they can criticize you to death..and all they are really doing is driving our stock price down, so long term employees like myself have our profit sharing shredded.  Where could a cashier become a millionaire??? Happened several times in the Walmart family...before everyone was told how evil the Walmart World is..would you believe that Walmart gives about $22,000 a minute away to charities world wide?? How about the labor unions?  How much do they give to charities a minute?

Bluebayou,
I agree with you 100%. My last three guns came from Wal-Mart and if the one here still sells guns thats where my 45-70 will come from. ;D

I shop at Wal-Mart all the time. It is, in fact, the first palce I go to for whatever it is I need, then if they don't have it, I go looking elsewhere. Our store is the one mentioned earlier by Cbourbeau and so I am awlays watching and checking out guns at the store and through the special order catalogs. That being said I will add that I don't agree with all of their coporate or political decisions and affiliations of late. Gays, outsourcing, etc.
I also am saddened by the fact that Congress is now majortized by the democrats and that in all probablility that our next president will also be a democrat, history almost dictates it. I will not, however, renounce my US citizenship as a result, nor will I move to another country and support it with my $$ and commerce trade until the Republicans are back in control. I also will not quit shopping at Wal-Mart..........nuff said?
I will however, and this is key, PRAY for both our country and for Wal-Mart along with many other issues as well. Thank you.

I haven't spoke to anyone in my local walmart about the situation.  I have noticed the gun racks being emptier that usual, but that could still be from Christmas sales.  Most people I know buy their guns at walmart. The gun counter always seems busy.

I stopped in another walmart about 40 miles from my home the other day in a town larger than mine.  They have moved the gun counter from the back of the sporting goods department to next to the main aisle.  they also added another aisle of gun related items, including a pretty good selection of reloading supplies.  They now carry bullets, brass, powder, dies, presses and just about everything needed for basic reloading. There were lots of people shopping in those aisles, looking at guns etc.

Hopefully this will happen in other stores that have a large volume of gun sales.  Maybe they will increase inventory where it sells.

I just got off the phone with walmart corporate (1-800-walmart) and the woman on the phone said ALL walmarts will not be special ordering guns. She had received a few complaints and said she would send mine to corporate. I would encourage any one who can to call and complain.

I've bought two rifles from Walmart over the years, neither sale was a stellar experience. The counter help lacked knowledge of rifles or even how to handle the sale of one. In both cases the prices were enough to help me swallow my pride and buy from them. The last rifle I bought there took three hours to complete the sales process. I have also knowingly paid more to local gun shops for a rifle that I could have bought cheaper at Walmart, the reason being to support the shop that gave the best service.
That said I have never seen a company so willing to bend over backwards to help employ people with disabilities. I can't applaude them enough for that. We probably do the majority of our shopping at Walmart, just not for rifles. I still hate to see any company quit selling guns.

Well boys I certainly didn't mean for this to turn into a bash Walmart post.  I just wanted to know why the guns on the website were a little sparse.
I tried to go to our local Wally World to check things out and there wasnt' anybody in sporting goods.  That was odd because there is ussually a couple guys working.  They were in some kind of nightly meeting according to the girl in the tire department.  I didn't feel like waiting around so I'll check it out this weekend.

  Blue is true !
I agree with Blue. I have bought several guns from Walmart in recent years. The Walmart I deal with has about 5 different people that work in the dept that sells guns. Two are fairly knowledgeable, two know very little and one is a real pro (former gun shop owner).
I don't care if the person behind the counter knows anything about guns...it is my job to know what I want when I get there !

The price is always right at Walmart (comparatively) and they are quick to rectify any problems with their merchandise.

I just hope they don't get the yuppie, big head attitude that Target has..wouldn't make sense to immitate an organization that is a loser compared to Walmart.

As for the union deal..everyone that works at Walmart asked for their job..noone from Walmart went out into the street, roped them and dragged them into the store and put them to work.
If you don't want the truth, don't ask me.  If you want something sugar coated...go eat a donut !  (anon)

I was on a design team that was doing product photography for Home Depot.  The Suits refered to their employees as aprons.  ie "How many aprons do we have..? blah..blah"  I was disappointed in their arrogance but it was hard not to recall all of the words I say in places like The Depot and Wal Mart.  As a former retail manager I frequently leave said establishments in disbelief of the apparent distance between the staff getting their hours in and them actually being a benefit to the company.  The scary part is the manager that approved these peoples hiring.  I went to Wal Mart Saturday.  Incompetance abounds with the weekend crew.  H&R is closed weekends anyway so I decided to wait until a weekday after being handled so clumbsily.  Especially in a firearms sale.  I agree that the register staff doesn't necisarily have to be aces but I haven't met an ace yet at our WM.  There accesory rack speaks to that.  I say.  I basically ran for my life from those shoppers.  Pretty funny seeing people buying Tampons and Ramen at the gun counter ;D.  I called H&R CS myself today.  I'll order my 30-06 Handi this week.  I still have time before this WM stops special ordering and inventually stops selling firearms.  At this point Loewz, The Depot, WM, even Searz is on my cr@p list.  It's disappointing since they were such strong niche retailers for so long.  One day I hope to find the quality of service much higher.  The prices are still good and the products are still above average for the most part but at some point...Does corporate care?  I get the feeling as long as there are enough aprons your chances are pretty good of actually finding a plumber in electrical. :P

A similar topic at MarlinOwners...

Quote from: big medicine
Here is what I got. I spoke with a Gentleman named Doug at the firearms center at Walmart HQ. About 1000 Walmart stores will still sell guns. Much has been made about customer demands. So if your Walmart does not have gun sales make it known to the local manager and write to Walmart HQ, have your friends write and tell the local manager. If there is enough customer demands they may put firearms back into those stores. They are still evaluating which stores will carry firearms. So if your store still has them, make it known that you want to keep it that way.

If stores do not sell firearms they can not special order firearms. They do not have FFL's at those locations.

I think I may be the only one here that doesn't go to walmart for my firearms.  About the only firearm related purchase I have made there is shotgun shells and sporting clays when they are on sale.  I have been told that all the ones in my area are no longer selling firearms, but the bean counters are not going to let the stores that thrive on gun sales stop doing so.  I have just never been too keen on the service or prices I have gotten at the stores. I live in the middle of Amish country, but the closest walmarts are fairly close to normal civilization.  I bought my handi from a gunshop about an hour from my house.  Stainless 22" barrel with synthetic stock n .223 delivered for just under 250.  I purchased the Burris scope online, but the shop I go to through in the rings and bore sighted it for just over 260 because of tax.  I never even looked anywhere else especially the cursed soon to be way to liberal for my redneck blood walmart.

In reading some of the posts, hopefully I do not offend anyone.  Its obvious to me that some of us have not seen the hand writing thats been on the walls for a number of years.  At the same time WalMart had goods in their warehouses with foreign labeling, the big 3 automakers were bringing imports into the country and putting their name one them.  My job was sold out to Austrailians in the late 80's and shipped to Malyisa.  The exact same thing this company did to their workers in Aust.  Come on people, open your eyes, its a world economy.  Toyota's being made on the same line as GM products, Ford and Mazda, GM and Saab.....Its All About One Thing.....the bottom line.  The suits were educated by the liberal teachers to look for one thing......profit.....not to worry about if their employees are treated right.  Ford is laying off but Honda is building new plants, GM is laying off but Toyota is building new plants, get the picture.  Open the hood of your car, who made the motor, who made the motor mounts...there are no "brands" any more, they buy from the cheapest source.  Not trying to be negative, just truthful.  I don't care for Walmart as an organization, but I still shop their cause it saves me $$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

Bigger company's will always buy smaller one's.  I hate it that labor and jobs get shuffled the way they do.  Good people suffer.  But when the dust settles Americans will adapt.  Within our boarders there seems to be a rise in management and engineering even software education which doesn't exactly land you in a plant like my grandfather and my uncles.  These are loyal guys, 40 year careers w/ the GM etc.  But times change so there's no excuse for below average work ethics.

How's the customer service around the world?  Probably not much better.  I worry that people aren't connecting there career efforts to there inspiration.  Kids learn to get a job, pay for school, leave the job, get another job, get a loan, pay for management certifications, get promoted...or don't because they move around so much they actually end up with no relavent skills to connect on a resume.  Less people really put themselves into it anymore.  Our teachers work hard as more and more kids can't engage.  Kids can't sit through a meal in a public place without being plugged in.  I still can't figure out the kids with ipods and xboxes while their folks barely make ends meet.  Now a days people spend $$ not save it.    There are fewer poeple who sit quietly and think.  Fewer people who have peace with their work.  I stayed in the picture framing industry for 12 years.  2 companies (I moved) or it would've been 1.  I believe in getting your education on the job. I also believe in professionals and school.  I went to college and moved on from that carrer path. It's hard to know where I fit in.  I currently don't use my degree and I don't manage that design shop anymore.  I think a lot of people share that story.  It's hard that we'll suffer it out for our kids but that's where it's at.

But more and more small operations can come up now.  There's a greater gap between big industry and its moving parts and the resources for individuals to start from scratch.  It's become very appealling for consumers to know where there products are coming from.  The big wigs know it which is why we can talk about Bill Gates or Trump as if we know them in some way.  They know that people have to stay connected to the product in order to trust it.  That is a big problem in the auto industry now is that as the company's expand across the world we can't relate to the product as well.

But where does that leave my boss?  We're a small company.  I hope to split and sort of niche/partner up with him in a few years as our current company grows but in a lot of cases people just split.  No loyalty.  No vision of partnership and workmanship.  This is another industrial revolution in a lot of ways and I really think when the world embraces the power of a broader world work force we will see new and better opportunites across the board.  It's unfortunate but it's not enough to just be yourself anymore.  We have to know our competitors and our partners and become them too.  We draw lines within lines and challenge every inch.  Stakes are too high.  The same way that life affects people and changes them so does the world affect its nations.  Our responsibilities and opportunities won't always be the same which gets tough when things haven't changed in so long.

I think it's a good thing personally, Now the small mom-n-pop places have a better chance of turning a profit and you might be able to get actual knowledgeable service and light gunsmithing instead of some teenager that doesn't know the difference between 25-06 and 25acp.

I ordered my new Ultra Varminter 22-250, 3 weeks ago from Walmart in Watkins Glen NY. Then after a week, the store called me and said that they would not be able to get it for me! I ended up oredering it from Biekirchs in Rochester NY. It looks like they are even clearing out most of the hunting/ shooting accessories as well. What would Sam think about all of this?

Sam wouold be mortified and is probably turning over in his grave. I saw two young wal-mart employees yelling profanities at each other as they collected shopping carts the other day with there hats on sideways. I thought for a minute of alerting management but there is no use. It's just today's culture.
