Bug Out Gun and Bag
« on: October 30, 2006, 12:05:07 PM »
I finished the gun up last night.  It's a 20 gauge, 26 mod. choke built from left over parts.  Locks up tight as a drum.

Nice looking set-up Swampman.

Bag looks vaguely familiar. Any details would be appreciated. I just can't place where I've seen something like that before.

Ps. Gransfors axe?

Nice setup.  I have an H&R 088 12 ga. mod. I bought new many years ago just for grins.  I spray painted it for camo and used to grab it for short walks but never for serious hunting.  It just sits in the closet with a shell sleeve on the butt and a couple of low-base #8 shot in the loops on the astronomically rare possibility I ever need to "repel borders."  Last Monday I installed sling swivel studs just as you have.

Tuesday I took it pheasant hunting as a "spare" and to see how it would handle.  I started the day with it and never switched to my Ithaca pump.  Steel shot was required in the area and I shot 6's at three birds and 4's at the last one.

I only had four shot opportunities:  I folded the first bird of the day; missed an easy straight away in the wide open because I rushed; missed a long crossing shot on a bird flushed by other hunters;and folded the last bird of the day.  Fifty percent shooting is a little above my usual daily average with any shotgun, so I was happy.  And it was a lot lighter & handier to carry around for 7 hours than any of my pumps.

That's cool!  I have a NEF 12 Gauge Turkey gun with removeable chokes, a 16, and two 20 gauges.  I like how light and handy they are.  I may get a .22/410 for my Christmas present. ;D

Yesterday I added one of those elastic stock bands that holds 5 rounds.

That's a great setup you have, swampman.  Now for the question....what's IN the bag??  I know I can't be the only one wondering what goes in YOUR bug-out bag.LOL
Thanks

It is set up for flight mostly. I don't want to draw attention to myself if it can be helped. Without going into a lot of detail it will provide food, clean water, fire and fire wood, shelter, cooking and eating gear, one change of clothes, ammo, and enough to get me by for a few weeks.

I'd probably carry my Colt New Frontier .22 as well.

Primary food is rice, chicken bouillon cubes, spices, sugar cubes, tea & coffe bags.  The hope is to add game to make it last longer.

Saw your picture in THE BACKWOODSMAN magazine. Nice set up.

The pack is probably a DULUTH pack

I read on here a lot about bugging out and bug out bags. But the one thing I guess I've never really figured out is: Where the heck you gonna bug out to and why? I honestly do not understand what it is you guys have in mind.

There are lots of thick woods and swamps around here.  We have terrible weather, and then looters.  You never know when you might need to leave the house with only a few seconds notice.  I'm ready.

It's better to be ready and not need it.  I can live for a few weeks without a problem with my BOB and my Pardner.

Bug out Bag is a general term. It means several things to different people.

Bug Out might mean that you are at home, there is a fire, you have 2 minutes to get out. You get out of your home and have to stay at a shelter or a friends home. Do you have the things in your car or by the door to keep you comfortable in a difficult situation.

Think of what happened in New Orleans. What if the population had a backpack ready to go with essential supplies for three days? How many lives would have been saved? How many would have been made more comfortable?

There are also "GET HOME BAGS". These are bags/backpacks that you keep in your car in case of an emergency. Tools, jumper cables, food, extra clothing, blankets, etc.  What if you had a blizzard so sever while at work that you could not make it home? How comfortable would you be?

Bug Out does not mean escaping to some wilderness location.  99% of the time it means providing you with necessities to get you through a disaster.

I keep a small backpack in my trunk at all times. Right now it contains the following:

Long underware (I am in Maine and it is cold up here)
spare jeans
wool shirt
fleece jacket
canteen with water
blanket
wool hat
gloves
scarf
small pocket stove
fuel
4 mountian house meals
matches
shirt
small shovel
first aid kit
poncho
tarp
550 para cord
sewing kit
etc.....

I also keep a sleeping bag, long shovel and other items for "JUST IN CASE."

No mater what happens....I will make it home.

sounds like a nice kit Ridgerunner, I'm from New England and have a camp in Maine, been going to Maine for about 60 years now but I'm still a flatlander, dontchaknow. There are some here that may not know the joy of coyote hunting along the Golden Road in -27 degree weather with a little 40 mph wind gusting or of being stuck deep in the woods when it's a bit "nipply" out, but those of us that do always keep something warm and a few essentials with us. A couple of blankets and better yet a sleeping bag is a great start. Your kit seems well thought out, congratulations....<><.... :)

Thank you.

I also keep an Ontario Pilots survival knife, socks, small ax, toilet paper, multi-tool, flashlight, spare batteries and a small trasistor/short wave/am/fm radio for good measue.

I just bought a Brisitsh surplus pattern 58 sleeping bag that I plan to replace the blankets with in my trunk. I cost me $25 and is rated for 10 degrees. I am letting it air out now and want to test it before putting it in my trunk. It is slightly bulky, but for the price it seemed like a good deal.

The kit changes based on the seasons - more water in the summer, more fuel in the winter, a small tent or hammock during the summer.

I feel so much better with it in my trunk. I often carry a concealed snub nosed revolver (legally) and some spare ammo for just in case.

I started keeping it religiously after watching what happened during Katrina in New Orleans.

Cookieman that site contains nothing I need, but a lot of stuff I want. I always keep enough stuff in the back seat up my truck to last a good while. Basic tools. E-tool, couple of guns, extra clothes. Everyone I work with thinks I'm nuts but if things got ugly they would all be lost. Nobody hunt's or fishes, They don't know how to find any of the local edible plants and find security in living in town. I'm not quite the survivalist nut that I used to be but I'm never without a knife and always at least close to a gun.GB asked where are you bugging out to? I'm building a house there right now and permanantly bugging out. I'm getting out of the town and returning to the country. Why? Traffic, rude teenagers with their hat sideways, not being able to walk out my back door and shoot my guns. Bill, you are not alone in wondering were all these "bugging out" folks are going because around here there a fewer and fewer places that are worth buggung out to all the time.

CooKieman, I'm from Delaware. The tiny little state that's east of Maryland and west of Jersey. It's gotten so a fellow can't turn down a back road and take a leak anymore. Ther seems to be a new subdivision popping up at every turn. When a guy has been farming a couple hundred acres and just barely breaking even and Mr.Developer walks up to him and says I'll give you $4,000,000 it's not hard to figure out why we are loosing all the small farms in our area.

Swampman,

Is this the same gun pictured in the Nov/Dec issue of the Backwoodsman?

The top picture appears on page 7 of the Jan/Feb issue of "The Backwoodsman."  It is the same gun.

Did you guys see the pics I took this morning?

Mighty pretty knife there! Love that sheath -- is there a pattern to be had for it? I would like to try my hand at making a knife sheath. Thanks!
