Ruger MK 2 optical question
« on: January 11, 2007, 01:13:59 PM »
Have a Mk 2, would like to mount either a red dot or a 2x scope.  what mounts should I use?
I guess I need my gunsmith to drill and tap.

What do you prefer for hunting, red dot or scope?

I'm using a Tasco Propoint. Other than the problem I have forgetting to turn it off, it works great. Use the 12 o'clock edge of the dot for the aimpoint. Good medicine for rabbits and squirrels.

My MK III came drilled and had a Weaver style scope base in the box. The Propoint comes with 30mm rings.

Your Mark II will need to be drilled.

I am getting a MK II Competition and it is drilled and tapped. Yours may not be.
There are at least 2 choices: Ruger mounts and base, available on the Ruger website, or Weaver mounts and base. The Weaver base is available from Ruger or Brownell's, with Weaver compatible rings available from many sources. I plan to use the Weaver base on mine with Warne QD mounts.

I have a Ruger 22/45 that I have won several competitions with. I chose the "SOLOW" mounts for my reddot. I think the mounts are fantastic and they do a great job of keeping you optics down close to the bore. If you check on the internet I am sure you can find them. I have put many thousands of rounds through this set-up and it is incredible. My little 22/45 has had the internals reworked, polished feed ramp, competition trigger from Volquartsen, and the SOLO mounts holding a Millet Red Dot. Good luck with your 22!

Its a long time since I mounted the rail on my slab side but if I remember its a VQ rail  I think.

Scope is an UltraDot 4 Dot MatchDot. The Ultradot has four dot sizes - 2,4,6 and 8 MOA and a 30mm diameter tube. Click adjustable brightness control. Available only in a Black/Silver matte finish. The MatchDot comes with lens covers, extension tube, polarizing filter, rings, allen wrench and battery. It is not cheap but you get what you pay for. I also have one on my 44 magnum and holds up no problems to the shock of full loads.

There are other "no-drill" mounts, besides the solow which only works with 30mm tubes.  I have a weigand mount and it worked well, when it was on my mkII. You do have to remove the rear site, but it was very stable and study.

Thankyou guys

either of those no drill mounts will do great for me.
Did you say you have both?  If so, which do you like best.

also: did you mount scope or red dot?  which do you like best? what brand?

The solow looks like a winner, thanks again.
