muzzle tamer on a 223, will it let me see hits?
« on: September 06, 2006, 07:10:22 AM »
Will the Foxridge break or magna port let me see the hits , I am in the process of building a short 223 rifle for p dogs, a G2 with a 16.25 barrel and a 4x14 compact scope.    Thanks for any input.

I would think so but I don't have that combo so I can't say for sure.  I had a long .222 barrel without a brake and I could see hits with that one.  The shorter barrel may not hold so still.

Please don't take this the wrong way Jerry, but even though it's a short barrel .223, it's still a rifle. There is very little recoil to a .223 even with max loads. So why magna port it (man....that's gonna be really loud) or put a muzzle brake on it?

My shootin buddy has a Bullberry 16" .223 and whacks the 400 yard 12" plate all day with no problems...no muzzle brake and no magnaport....and he can still hear!!!!

The .223 is loud enough on it's own. A muzzle brake or magnaport just makes it that much louder.

Just my $.02

magnaport says their porting doesnt increase the noise, either way i'd recommend some kind of hearing protection
I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?"
Well, to tell the truth I shoot a Springfield XD so it doesnt really matter.

While it doesn't make more noise it does direct the noise to different areas, such as back around the shooter and anyone else next to them.  It also lets a 223 blow all papers etc. not tied down off the bench.  I have a 222 barrel that could use a refinish job.  TC will do that for $75, and will add a brake and refinish for $85.  I was going to do that until I was around a friends gun (223 with brake) and decided it was awful.

I have a Contender, with a hunter(read muzzel brake) Super 14 223cal. barrel. It IS painfully loud. Still don't see the hits through the scope, but it will blow your baseball hat off from the concussion comming from the muzzel brake! :o I use it coyote hunting, and wear ear plugs. I just wear one until I'm about to take the shot, then stick the other one in. It is extreemly loud.

I have a couple of T/C's Hunters barrels with muzzel brakes. Nice for the recoil, but the blast will deafen you. (For the 223 I wouldn't )
