Got my new CZ550 American!
« on: March 09, 2007, 12:32:17 AM »
Picked up my CZ550 in 416 Rigby yesterday!  I'm pretty excited to get out and shoot this gun.  The one I got has the american style stock and two crossbolts so I'm hoping to avoid the splitting problems that I've heard about.  The inletting of the stock left a little to be desired but it looked like they might have done some glass bedding, there was an epoxy like substance in the recoil lug area of the stock.  Checkering is nice and the recoil pad is a HiViz.  Bolt is a bit rough, any suggestions on how to get it slicked up would be appreciated.  I didn't know CZ did this, but there's a third stock attachment screw on the barrel that attaches to a sliding "hub" (for lack of a better word) underneath the barrel about 6" forward of the receiver, interesting.  Good express sights though 300 yards with the last leaf seems a bit hopeful.  If it shoots well it'll be a great gun, and only paying $749 makes it that much better.

I have a CZ 550 with the Euro stock. I bought it 2 years ago, but it only came with one cross bolt. I had it glass bedded and the barrel floated. I am getting 1 inch groups at 100 yards with it. It is a tack driver. Keep us update on how it works out for you.  ;)

Congrats on the new .416!  You're going to love it!

In regard to slicking up the bolt, with the .458 that I have, I slathered up the bolt with JB bore paste, and worked it about a thousand cycles.  It does a wonderful job, producing what is now the slickest bolt in my collection.  One word of caution however, do not turn the bolt into the locked battery position.  That would lap the locking lug surfaces, and therefore increase the headspace.  Just cycle the bolt fore and aft without turning it down.  Give it a good flushing with some sort of crud cutter afterward to get all of the paste out, and you're good to go!

I would recommend a proper glass bedding job, even with the new dual crossbolts, and by the way, if your sights don't regulate, you can order different front inserts from CZ-USA.  I had to order the tallest front that they offer, which still wasn't quite high enough, so for me, it's time to start filing down the rear leaves.

Again, congratulations, and I hope that you truly enjoy your new big bore!

I originally ordered it back in September because the salesman said it'd be 749.99, that's what did it for me.  While I waited for it to come in the same store had a used Ruger #1 in 416 Rigby come their way and I picked that up instead, but the salesman never cancelled the order for the CZ.  I got a call in February telling me that my CZ had come in and I originally told them that I didn't want it because I already had the Ruger.  I couldn't resist looking so I quickly called them back and looked at it the next day.  I decided to pick it up from them but they told me the price was $850, I told them I was promised $750 and I was only interested if that was the price.  They gave in and I took home the CZ.  To make this long story short, I benefited from them taking so long to get the rifle in the store.

You will like that gun.
I'm very interested to know how the factory cross-bolted stock holds up.
Mine is one of the pre-cross bolt models. It's off getting glass bedded and bolted right now. Interesting to note that the stockmaker who is doing my bedding job called and said that the stock was already showing minor signs of damage. That was after firing only 5 rounds of A-Square solids.
The CZs are a great deal. You can afford to do some upgrading on them, and still have a bargain when you are finished.
