.223 Query
« on: January 14, 2007, 02:49:25 PM »
Is there any commercial ammo in .223 Remy that DOES NOT have to be swaged when reloading?Pre haps I could use new brass.Don't know, all I have ever loaded is "once fired".I have an RCBS swager combo,it works fine, except it's hard to set deeepth and even harder to strip case from the head.I guess it would work better on a RCBS press.I'm using it on a Lyman Crusher II.This getting to be a pain in the butt :'(...............Rick

I've got years of experience with the 223, and have loaded tens of thousands of rounds.

I'm not sure what you mean by "swaged"? ???

If you're talking about sizing the cases, then no. If that's what you're talking about, you have to size cases so they'll grip the new bullet you seat in them. With most factory barrels, bullets will literally fall inside the case if they're not sized.

I believe he is referring to swaging the primer pocket..most have a military crimp, because of its use in AR-15 format rifles.

The good stuff, IE the expensive ammo shouldn't have crimped primer pockets, Winchester White Box usually does have crimped primer pockets, as well as all military brass.

I fooled around with an RCBS primer pocket swager for years, cussed that thing up one side and down the other, it just doesn't work very well.  After reading glowing reports about the Dillon Super Swage I broke down and bought one, I've been kicking myself ever since!

I wish I had bought the Dillon years ago, why did I wait so long? It's not perfect, but it's head and shoulders above the RCBS, and it's fast, unlike the horribly slow RCBS!  The Dillon isn't cheap, but it's worth the money.

I haven't the faintest idea of what procedure(s) you're referring to.  Are you talking about removing the military crimp from the primer pocket??  If so that's a simple, easy task that only has to be done once.  I don't know what you mean by "setting the depth".  Also, "strip the case from the head" has me in the dark.
regardless of whether you're using a RCBS or a Orange Crusher, the individual steps in reloading are pretty straightforward and easy.
Have you read any reloading books??  Maybe the problem is a matter of terminology.

Iam talking about swarging the primer pocket. The RCBS swager/combo I have works...but a problem with the case sticks to the swager head after case primer pocket has been swaged. The case stripper does not come up high enough to remove the case from the head.I would prefer to buy brass that does not have the primer crimp in it.Am thinking of getting the Dillon 600 Swage, cuz I can get once fired brass at the FOP range I belong too.Iam the only member that reloads.Cals .223,.45 acp,9mm,.40 S&W,.308, .270 and .3006 are very easy to come by there..........Rick

i just chuck up a inside case neck reamer in a drill and ream them out like that. I had a dillon swadging tool and it was the slickest way but foolishly sold it at one time when i got rid of my .223s Now that i have a few again i just never bought a new one. The reamer does work pretty good for me though but you have to be carefull not to take to much of a cut as primers will not seat as firmly.

I have been using the inside case debur head on my RCBS trim pro with good success. The standard debur tool is also supposed to work fine. One turn in the primer pocket is supposed to remove the crimp.

The case sticking on the head of the RCBS is normal, it's the way the RCBS is designed, that's one of the reasons I was so happy to get the Dillon Super Swage, I can do 5 or 6 cases in the time the RCBS takes for one case.
