Need some scope advice
« on: April 22, 2007, 10:46:47 AM »
I have a .223 24" bull barrel coming from H&R and intend to put a scope on it for hunting varmints.  I've hunted groundhogs for years but have never used anything higher than a 3X9 scope.  My question is, considering the accuracy and range of this .223 would I be better of with a variable power scope with a maximum of 16 power, 24 power or 36 power?

Thanks,
Roudy

I have always used 6x24s on my 223, they are great for the long shots, and for seeing the holes at the range.  If you are buying a cheaper brand of scope dont go over 24 power because its most likely they will get pretty fuzzy.

I think a Bushnell Banner 6x18x40 would be a great match. Good luck with it.

No ground hogs here to shoot, but if there were, I'd use the Eraticator Mac pointed out, I have one on my 204 Ruger Handi, great scope, crystal clear, tracks well and won't break the bank!

The APV wouldn't be a bad choice either if you'll settle for 14x, it's $115 shipped at the link above.

If you want the 8.5-25X, but in a smaller objective without the illumination, the Tactical would be a great choice for a little less money than the Eraticator, but same great glass.

Right now I am using a Tasco (Don't Laugh) 6-24x42mm Scope. It has an adjustable objective and I am really liking this scope. I can't use the hammer extension because I am using low rings and the hammer extension hits the power adjustment ring. Luckily I figured that out before I ever dropped the hammer.

My friend has a Cabela's brand scope. It's something like 6-24x with a side focus knob instead of the adjustable endbell. It's about $120 and perty nice.

After a lot of searching I am thinking of the Tasco 6X24X42.  I have a couple Tasco scopes and a Tasco spotting scope that I've used for years and still like it a lot.

Thanks for your suggestions.

BSA makes a scope called the sweet 223, 4-12. I've got the sweet 22 2-7 on my 22 and it seems to work as advertised. When I get my 223 barrel I'm gonna get one, $106 up here (Alaska) probably less down in America...

I bought the BSA Sweet 17 for my .17HMR Sportster and the optics are very clear in it.  I am in the process of getting it sighted in.  The bullet drop compensator is for the 17gr bullets, not sure how it will work with the 20gr.  I need to get some after I get it dialed in.

I don't know the BSA line very well, I have never purchased one myself.  It would be wise to inquire whether that is enough scope for the .223 recoil wise. It will probably be ok because the recoil isn't that hard, but if that scope is made for a rimfire like the .17hmr it may have an issue when used on a .223.  I love the sportster in that caliber.  My brother has the .17 sportster and it is the reason I bought my handi in .223. We both put on a Burris fulfield II 4.5-14x42, but that is more scope than either rifle required. I get a little carried away with my glass, but that is just the way I am.

Edit:  Let me rephrase the first part of this, I did not read Dave's post completely. Somehow I managed to skip over it. sorry.

I am always looking for a bargain. Sometimes I win sometimes I lose. A recent winner was a Bariska 6X24 AO for $56 from Midway. I put it on my .204 Handi, and it works great. I also have Tasco, BSA, Bushnell, and a TC scope I bought used for a good price. My BAR deer rifle does have a good old Redfield (more than I normally pay).

good luck,

Finally ordered and received the scope I wanted for the new .223 barrel that also arrived this week.  Got a Tasco 6X24X44 for $80 plus shipping and handling.  While I haven't shot it yet I think I'm going to like the scope, it is called a Target/Varmint scope and has turrets on it so you don't have to remove caps to adjust the reticle.  Also came with two sunshades, a short one and a long one.

I look at MSRP's with tongue in cheek, this one was listed at $180, but I found it at a couple other suppliers at $120-$150 so the price was good and it isn't re-manufactured either.  Don't know if I can mention the supplier here so I'll skip that unless I hear differently.

Also checked the rate of twist on the new .223 barrel and found it is 1 turn in 9 inches, so probably wont stabilize 35-45 grain bullets as well as heavier ones.  Really like this barrel so far, seems to lockup like a bank vault and very quietly.  It's an extractor version.

Will be heading to the range to give the new barrel and scope a baptism Friday or Monday and will post the results.  I did polish the bore with Flitz for about 1/2 hour, sure was rough the first few passes, but eventually smoothed out a lot.

Natchez Shooters has the 5-15x40 Browning scope for 209.  It is comparable with the Bushnell Elite 3200.  Good glass

I have a 204 Ruger BB and I put a 4-12X Bushnell Elite 3200 with an AO. I think anything over 9X should have an AO. ;D

Roudy, I have this exact scope on my 223 Ultra, bought it from them as well, and have had it on my 223 sense I am guessing 3 years or so. For the little $80 it's a very good scope and has tracked great. It may take a little tuning with the eyebell and parallax to get it just right, so mount it up and take your time. The fine cross hairs are hard to get level if you don't have one, but I love it for my varmint rig.
I mounted it up on my dads 243 Remington 700 for a few months while my receiver was out getting fitted and had no problems either. Here's hoping you have the same success  8)

Coincidentally, a guy at the range had this scope.  He had it on an old Remington 22 bolt rifle.  I was skeptical before I shot it, but it tracked very well.  He was shooting a page of postage stamp size targets without moving the rifle, just adjusting the scope.  It was pretty cool.  After 18x it was pretty dim and fuzzy though.

Well, I tried this 6X24X44 Tasco today, just breaking in the rifle and scope.  The parallax is really functional, if I had it set at 50 yards then looked at 100 yards the target was pretty fuzzy.  Guess one could use it for a really crude range finder, well maybe.

It will probably take me some time to get fully acclimated to it.  I did notice that when I get over 16 power it seems to lose a little clarity, but 16 power seems to be enough for me.  So far I'm happy with the scope.
