Sorry to have to ask but I really do HAVE to ask. Just how good are YOU capable of shooting? What other handguns do you have and how well do you shoot them?

Now with that out of the way have you cleaned the barrel recently? Might it be leaded up or copper fouled terribly? Have you measured the cylinder throats and do you know how closely they match your barrels diameter?

How are you shooting? Free hand? Off a bench? If from bench using what type rest? Iron sights or scope?

We need more info to help you.

Lots of difference to me between a contender and a revolver.  how are you resting the revolver on the bench.  The rest makes a huge difference with a revolver in my experience.  I always try to not rest the butt of the gun on anything where the gun can go through its natural rotation each time for consistency.  Try resting the frame on something and then something else under your wrist where they are not sitting on the bench.  Also, open sights?, reloads?, how is the trigger?.....

The gun could be a bit out of time.  Take it to your gunsmith and have him take a look at it.

What is the caliber of your pistol?

Are you sure the rear sight is not loose?  I was having troubles with my Ruger 357 till I figured out the sight insert was moving at every shot.

the trigger is excellent.i went over the gun today. when the hammer is at rest ican move the chamber with my fingers. when i cock the gun the chamber will still move but not as much.if i pull the trigger and hold the hammer back, then i cannot move the chamber at all. is this normal? before any body ask the gun was empty

tell me,  does the impact of the bullet seem to shift to the left?   i had three super blackhawks, and all three the barrels came loose on them.  for a while,  i thought i was going nuts because i couldnt hit anything with them, and i am a pretty good shot.

how many rounds have you shot through it?  and does the bullet impact shift noticably to one side?

i would make good and sure the gun is the problem, not you.   once that is done,  call ruger.   the one thing i have to admit about ruger is that they will stand behind their guns.  talk with them and see if they will look it over.  tell them your problems,  see what they seem to think.   there is a very nice lady there,  named donna,  that is the person you want to talk with.    if you want the problem to go away,  and you are SURE it is the gun,  send it back to ruger.

did the gunsmith check the mouth of all the chambers on the cylinder?  If they are slightly undersized  even by a little they will do bad things to the bullets as they go trough them also have him check the forcing cone

Since you shoot your B-I-L's gun well, assume it's the gun. Check the crown, the forcing cone and the mouths of the chambers. load ONE chamber at a time and shoot 3 to six shots from each chamber at a different target.. If none of the chambers group acceptably, send it  or call Ruger. If one or 2 chambers group and the rest don't ,Ruger again. Slugging the bore at both ends and the mouths of the chambers can tell you if they are the problem. You did not mention leading ,so I think you are using only jacketed ammo..Maybe a change to some cast will help?

sluging is forcing a soft slug(lead or other soft metal) thru the barrell. The slug roates and creates an inverse  image of the barrell which you can the get a accurate measurment of the barrell;s true diamenter as well rifling depth and condition. Even new barrell from the same manafacture can varry. Once you know the tru diamenter you can select the proper bullet diamenter.

Have you asked another competent shooter to shoot your revolver to see what kind of groups they are getting?

Otherwise, I certainly agree with most of the suggestions offered thus far.

If you bought the gun used, you may want to get a lead remover.  If someone shot soft lead bullets at high velocities, you probably have a really bad leading problem.  The kits using a brass screen material over a rubber knob work really well at removing lead.  If you do have lead, don't forget to also clean the lead from the end of each chamber.  The kit I used to use was called, "L.E.D." if I recall correctly.  It was also marketed under "Lewis Lead Remover" for a time.

Hope you can get it to shoot.  Nothing more frustrating than an inaccurate gun, except maybe a crashed computer. :o

I scanned the posts - I didn't notice it, so I'll ask.... How's your ammo?

If they are reloads there's a lot to look at and you can simply try dropping the bullets through the cylinders from the back and see how they seem to be fitted to your throats - not something that will give you a number, but it may show you that they are way over or way under sized. If you have factory ammo you could pull a couple of bullets for the same purpose.

What bullet weight are you shooting?

I dont know what to say to this post. Ive owned and shot (other peoples) probably 50 of them in my life and have never seen a super that shot like that or even heard of one that did. One thing to try if your not used to revolvers is making sure the grip you put on the gun is firm and is completely consistant both in pressure and where your hand is on the gun EVERY time. A small change in grip will really effect a single action where it wont a contendor. First thing id do if I were you is find someone you know can shoot a single action real well and have him try it. In my experinece a 3 inch group is terrible in a super and you about have to try to get one! The barrel turning suggestion is a good one as i just saw one of the new aniversary 44s do the same thing. But it would group well its just that the group eventually wandered.

I finality had a chance to shot today. 1st load win.240 usa. sprayed everywhere. 2nd. load fed 240 hydra shocks. alittle better. I then tried hornady 240 xtps. my god what a differents one bullet will make. my shot groups went almost nothing.some times the bullets holes would touch at 25 yards. only had 2 rounds left to try at 50 yards but managed to put them in a pie plate. i want to thank everyone for the advice you have giving me on this subject. i have used almost all of it. still not ready to hunt with the pistol i am getting a better idea on how to proceed ;D
