22lr and twist rates
« on: January 14, 2007, 09:46:51 AM »
Hey all, I've been looking at a new barrel for my 10/22 and came across one with a 1:9 twist. They said it was for the 60gr Aguila rounds, but I'm wondering if I went with one of these, what would happen to my standard 30 - 40gr bullets. Any thoughts?

I don't know for sure, but I tend to think that the fast twist and the fast velocity of the lighter bullets would lead-up the barrel quickly, particularly considering the soft lead used in .22 bullets. Just a thought. Mark.

Standard .22LR is 1:16 or thereabouts; the 1:9 doesn't shoot regular loads very well at all. If you get the barrel, you're stuck with the SSS Aguila rounds. If you plan on using it a lot, build two rifles and save yourself the headache. There's a lot more info at www.rimfirecentral.com regarding this type of conversion.

Another thought: If you reload a .223 or .22-250 and have a need to shoot heavies at slow velocities, you can use Blue Dot loads in either one, and premium bullets. Good luck!
