Need to help my grandson build a mini for a school project...What were they insulated with??  Don't want to use modern materials....styrofoam...or that sort of stuff.

I have that Tim.  It doesn''t  tell what they insulated them with...Dont think?  I assurmed the seaweed, sawdust and straw was what they used in the Ice House to insulate it after it was cut from the lake.

Hey Cookieman, the icebox on the right (C) in the thread that Quick led you to looks just like my buddies in Maine. I guess Quick quickley answered your questions....<><.... :)

I would think cork or some sort of fiber, asbestos perhaps in days gone by was possibly used. Anything that would create a dead air space, shredded and fluffy newspaper should work as well as anything else.....

They used those 4 things to insulate them...

Iceboxes had hollow walls that were lined with tin or zinc and packed with various insulating materials such as cork, sawdust, straw or seaweed.

Web used to have an old one that was insulated with cork.

I'd much rather be remembered for being a great shot than having the most expensive gun

Thanks for all the help, guys.  I must have just missed that part about the insulation.  It was late last night when I was researchin' for this project.  Thanks again, question answered...now all I gotta do is draw up some plans and gather materials.  This will be fun...

hey cookieman if you use cork and depending on the size of this project you can get 12x12x3/8"or1/2" sheets of cork at any craft store  they use to use them on the wall for bulletin boards . i think they come 3or5 in pkg.....
