This is almost comical to me because in Mississippi as of last year, any rifle .38 caliber and above as long as it is of a single shot design manufactured prior to 1891 or so (I can't remember exactly) is legal for use during "primitive weapon" season. Whats really funny is that the NEF Handi rifle somehow meets this criteria. So a lot of people here are using 45-70 Handi's  with Hornady Lever Evolution bullets to "muzzle loader" hunt. I still use my Encore .50 but I may well buy a Handi for my son next year.

ms10point,

Heck you could let your son use the Encore. Pick him up 20" prohunter barrel in 45/70. That way you have a good excuse to get a 2nd one 8) 8)

The Encore is not a legal primitive weapon in Mississippi! :o It does not have a U.S. Patent before 1900! Beats me! But that's what they done did in Mississippi! :P

Seems like a NEF would be a little cheaper.  Heck the encore barell will cost more than the single shot NEF!!!

BUT if you really want an excuse to buy another Encore, you could sure spin it to the wife that way.  :)

So let me get this straight.  A single shot Handi-rifle in 45/70 is legal, BUT a single shot Encore of the same caliber is not.

LMAO.....thats insane!

Yes, the inline muzzleloader hunters got stabbed in the back by the traditional clan. And why, so they can have less competion for a public resourse. They claimed the inline guns represented an unfair advantage due to advances in technologies. Never mind that the guns that actually posses the "new technologies" were already prhibited because they use the 209 primers (Idaho has never allowed 209 primers) When asked to explain just what the new technologies are, they say nothing. They have openly admitted the dispairity is not that great of a concern with the inlines that use #11 or musket caps, what the real issue is , they want fewer hunters in the MZ seasons giving them greater opotunity and less cometition for the public resourse. They are also claiming the inline guns kill too many mule deer which is leading to decreased mule deer numbers. So based on those argumants they are forcing the inline guns (#11 and musket only) guns into the modern firearms seasons where there is a definate disparity of balistic performance. Thats right, the traditional hunters complain about unfair advantage, but they have no problem forcing hunters who use guns that have very much the same performance as the traditional guns and force them into a season where they have to compete with the whole gamit of cartridge arms, such as the Weatherby's, Remington Ultra Mags and Lazzaronies. Now that is dispairity. Stabbe in the back by fellow hunters.

From the list it seems obvious.  The design must be pre-1900 and have an exposed hammer.

I understand that but realistically what is the difference. It is supposed to be a M/L season. M/L as in load from the muzzle.  ???

I assume from reading it that the season is marked "primitive weapon" no "muzzle loader"

Redhawk,
Technically speaking , we have a "primitive weapon" season not a "muzzle loader" season. One of my buddies shoots a Uberti 45-70 with a 32" barrel and a 4.5x14 VXIII Lupey. It may be based on an old design but to me it is not very "primitive"

The Mississippi Primitive weapons season includes both muzzleloaders and breech loaders...

Quote
PRIMITIVE WEAPONS
"Primitive firearms" for the purpose of hunting deer, are defined as single or double barreled muzzle-loading rifles of at least .38 caliber; single shot, breech loading, cartridge rifles (.38 caliber or larger) of a kind and type manufactured prior to 1900, and replicas, reproductions or reintroductions of those type rifles; and single or double-barreled muzzle-loading, shotguns with single ball or slug. All muzzle-loading Primitive Firearms must use black powder or a black powder substitute with either percussion caps or #209 shotgun primers or flintlock ignition. Breech loading single shot rifles must have exposed hammers and use metallic cartridges. Cartridges may be loaded either with black powder or modern smokeless powder. Scopes of any magnification are allowed on primitive weapons. Sidearms are not allowed during primitive weapon season.

Oh Yea! We front stuffer's can still hunt. I use my Whites through out all the firearm seasons. I don't have a problem with the single shot centerfire rifles as listed, but it would have been much more fair if they had to load them  black powder or a black powder substitutes. But the drift on that was GW weren't going to check for that any way ::), so they changed the rules. What did that do for us. Well like that hunter I met during the first Primitive weapons season, waring no orange, hunting with a Browning 7mag auto loader.  :o Yep! ::) That rule change was a real winner!!!! :P

Well excuse me.  :-\  Then I guess MISSISSIPPI's Primitive weapon season needs to be discussed in a different area. I think this is the MODERN Inline Muzzle Loading Rifles & Shotguns area.  :P   ;D ;)

We sure do seem to wonder around a bit on some of our threads. I do wish Ohio would consider some of the old straight wall catridges for its gun or primitive seasons. Sounds like fun no matter what weapon or pat dates could be used.
