Help me build the Ultimate Sportster (strictly for hunting)
« on: February 03, 2007, 09:40:25 AM »
Ok I have a Nef Sportster in 17hmr and I only had a chance to take it out once before the season ended. So my question is, what would you do to make it the ultimate hunter. I would like to put a pistol-grip stock on it but it has to be synthetic. And thats all I got so far. So what would you do???

You can get the Choate Varmint, Survivor or Tamer stock for it, the ATI stock may also work for ya, but is rather toy like in construction, you can see the ATI stock in the bottom link below.

The Forend has a built in track for their t-rail adapter that has a stud for attaching a sling or bipod. I'm not sure the butt has a sling stud, but it can be added, my .22-250 Ultra came with the T-rail and studs.

Could use a little more info as to what you will be hunting , tree rats , p-dogs , yotes ?? will you be using a bi-pod or shooting sticks ?? also what type of scope will you be using ?? all these will make a diffrence as to how to set up the rifle .

Sorry that would help huh? I'll be hunting mainly squirrels and a few groundhogs but almost strictly squirrels. I'll be buying a Mueller APV 4.5-14 pretty soon and as far as hunting I really see no need for a bipod while hunting tree-rats. I usually spot and stalk but I like to sit for an hour or so also. I gotta upgrade my shooting monopod for a real pair of sticks. much more steady. I Love the looks of a wood stock on the sportster but this gun doesnt have to look good. So I have a few more questions. I want a thumbhole or a pistol grip stock, that would make it easier when sitting and shooting off of sticks. Also I would like to add some weight to the butt of the rifle to better balance i out but with a pistol-grip I dont see how that is possible. Last but not least I would like to fully camo the rifle. But I have no idea where to start even the scope as well. Ok hope that clears some things up. And thanks for the help I appreciate it.

Hoosierhunter it is no light wieght it is 10 1/2 poundes and shoots so good you don't even know it is that heavy. It was a 22mag ultra varmit and did not shot to good then pricision rifle works got a hold of it and it is a different animal now. It is to heavy to use for practical hunting. Good for crows and chucks in a fieldand paper punching thats it. Good luck in your quest for the ulaimint.

Ok now lets work on this problem , if you want a pistol grip stock that can have weight added that only leaves the Survivor stock from Choate , it has a storage compartment in the stock so adding weight is no big thing .

If you are going to use a set of sticks , i'd stay with the standard forarm as the roll on the bottom will lend itself to centering in the V of the sticks .

If the but stock is a bit short a slip-on limbsaver pad will add to this at a low cost , as far as the scope , the Mueller is a very good choice .

Just some ideas to kick around .
