That might answer a few of your questions.
Get the highest Gen scope you can afford.
Gen II+ or Gen III. Gen I scopes won't be too impressive.

Another approach as opposed to a rifle scope type of weapon sight:

Eotech 552 Tactical Sights and Eotech 550 Tactical Sights are Night Vision Compatible Hologsights!
http://www.opticsplanet.net/eotech-holographic-sight-550.html

Use the above with either night vision goggles, or put a night
vision monocular on the rifle behind the Eotech.
This approach will not be cheap, but should eliminate the problem
of impact point shifting that I've seen in some night vision rifle scopes.
As an added benefit, the Eotech sight can be used like a conventional
dot sight during the day.

You're welcome.
By the way, if you go the Eotech dot sight route, then zeroing
the sights is less trouble of course. Just zero during the day, then
add the night vision behind the Eotech when it gets dark.
Also, I still recommend an IR flashlight. There are shadows at
night still, and the IR flashlight will light up the dark areas, like
under large trees for example. It will also make eyes glow like
crazy.

Here's the set up I'd use if just starting out, based on what
I know now.
