Ohio Handgun Hunters
« on: January 15, 2007, 04:06:50 AM »
I'd like to hear what you handgun hunters as to what you shoot (manufacturer, model, barrel length etc.)  Also what type of bullets? cast or jacketed and do you handload also any other information you may want to share.  Pictures would be great.  Game hunted whistle pigs to whitetail?

Thanks,

Turk

For deer sized things it is a Ruger Blackhawk in .41 mag with a 6 1/2 barrel and a Nikon 1.5 x 4.5 power scope, I shoot hard cast 265gr bullets out of it most of the time, or 210gr XTP hollow points. For smaller stuff and playing around it is a Dan Wesson in 32-20 shooting 120gr cast bullets or 85gr JHP out of an 8 inch barrel with iron sights.

I guess I should have stated what I use.  I have three favorites for whitetail 1st a Smith 57 (41 mag.) with a six inch barrel, loaded with a hand cast 246 gr. WFNGC bullet from a Ballisti-Cast mold.  2nd is a Ruger Bisley 45 Colt with a six inch barrel, loaded with a hand cast 300 gr. LFNGC bullet from a Ballisti-Cast mold and 3rd is my TC Contender 357 Max., with a 10” barrel loaded with a 180 gr. FNGC from a Saeco mold.  I use open sights and Red Dot sighting.  For varmints I use a TC Encore pistol in 6mmBR pushing a 60 gr. Berger HP and scoped.

The two that I have now for deer are a 6" gp100, and a accusport. 45colt bisley blackhawk(5.5" barrel).  Both have open sights.  I have used a .44 mag Lone Eagle w/ scope, and a 6.5" blackhawk with open sights.  The deer I have gotten so far with a pistol have been using jacketed bullets, I am deployed on a homeland defense mission right now with my guard unit, so I haven't been able to wring them out too well yet, but I got into casting boolits early last year, and am thinking of using those exclusively from now on rather than just practice loads.  I am thinking of getting the 283gr. .45 mold on cast boolits.com for next year, and I like the rnfp 158gr. .358 mold from lee for the gp100, you can't beat them for the cost.  I am shifting to all open sights as it fits my hunting style better with a pistol. I also have a mkII slabside gov. comp. model for close groundhogs, and raccoons in the barn and trees.  I got my wife a ss 5.5" single six for hunting.  These are what works for me.

For Deer I use a Super Blackhawk hunter with a Millet Reddot in .44 Mag, 265 gr 429244GC over 21.5 gr 2400(This is a hot load with the new powders work up from 19.0 grs.). This load averages 1406 fps @ 10 ft. For varmints I use the same gun with a 250 gr 429421 over 9.0 grs of unique, avg. 1100 at 10ft. I've also used a S&W Model 28 .357 for hogs at close range(iron sights). A S&W model 17 6" for chipmunks etc.

STIMPLY,

MAN I HOPE THAT YOU DONT USE YOUR DEER GUN HERE IN OHIO.  YOU STATED THAT THE GUY ON ONE OF THE OTHER POST SHOULD LOSE HIS HOUSE AND OTHER THINGS FOR POACHING.

YET YOU POST A BLIBB ON HERE SHOWING YOUR DEER HUNTING GUN RIG.  YOUR CALIBER IS NOT A STRAIGHT WALLED CARTRIDGE (INFORMATION OBTAINED FROM GARY READER.COM) WHICH IS ILLEGAL TO USE HERE IN THE STATE OF OHIO.  I HOPE YOU ARE NOT POACHING. THE CARTRIDGE IS WITH  OUT QUESTION NECKED DOWN.

LUCK when preperation meets opportunity.

Calm down guys , I DO NOT use it in Ohio , i have used it as a yote gun and also for groundhogs , talk about a mess when that 170 gr, JHP hits something .

I have used my 6" Ruger Ser. Six with out much luck , never saw a deer when i had it and have taken a few with a 12 ga. slug . I do plan to use it in other states were it is legal to use .
