Baiting Deer
« on: January 18, 2007, 10:10:20 AM »
I heard last night it will be illegal to feed and or bait deer in Wisconsin. Anyone else here the same? I never baited deer myself so it doesn't affect me , but it sounds like its going to make some people very unhappy.

Have heard rumors here as well, though nothing concrete. If it happens, it won't be a surprise - the anti baiting ethics police, coupled with the CWD saliva swapping study, will probaby be the demise of deer baiting in this state. Good/bad/indifferent

Its already illegal to feed deer here in Illinois, and has been illegal to bait them for hunting for as long as I can remember.  DNR is concerned about CWD being spread around feeders where hundreds of deer congregate in the winter.

some have been talking  about introducing legislation banning feeding and baiting.  I don't care either way. I end up getting dear weather I bait or not. I see more deer baiting but I don't have a problem getting a deer with a gun. Bow would be a little different though.  I just wish the fighting would just go away.  I kind of wish they would ban it because so many hunters over bait. Reducing it to a gallon and putting a thousand dollar fine and advertising it on the front page of the rules book would help a lot.  I think that's the only thing that's going to stop the illeagal baiting.

The DNR can't enforce the rules as they are. How would changing the baiting laws do any good? Future budget cuts will only make enforcement tougher.

Sounds like a feel good law at best.
