anybody know how to find a good lawyer?
« on: December 26, 2006, 11:20:57 AM »
I have been carrying for two years now, and hope I never need it. I would like to find a good lawyer to find out about the laws in Pennsylvania. I would like to find one that has specialized in this sort of thing. I know it's going to cost me money, but I think it would be money well spent. I just don't have a clue on how to find a good one.

Contact the NRA, perhaps they can give you the name of a gun friendly attorney in your area.

If there is a Range in your area ask them I am sure they have a Lawyer who is up on the various Gun laws so as to peotect the Range, and also ask the gunshops in your area some of them will have clients who are Lawyers, aside from that have a auto accident the vehicle behind the Ambulance will contain a lawyer willing to give advice, ;D   JIM

I would go the NRA route as well...Are you looking for a lawyer in case you need to use your firearm in a lethal force situation or are you looking for a lawyer to tell you when you should or should not carry your handgun?

I have a lawschool classmate who  went to work in Philly.  He wouldn't be of much help but he might have some suggestions as to who would.  PM me if you want his name and number.

I'm not looking to put one on retainer or anything like that. I would like to know one for that just incase, but really I'm looking for to spell out the laws in PA about when/where you can carry as well as when the law says it's ok to use lethal force to protect yourself. Also I would like to find out  what precedent as been set.  I looked around the NRA webite but couldn't find anything.

Isn't all of that typically spelled out in a concealed handgun class?  At least one (maybe more do it too) of our local instructors has someone from DPS come by to break the laws down into english for those of us that don't speak 2-faced-protect-the-illegals-and-criminals jargon.

You could probably save yourself some money by contacting a concealed carry instructor and asking if they have a "refresher" on state and federal laws.
The problem with troubleshooting is....sometimes it shoots back!

I have a CC permit, but have never taken a class on CC. Didn't know they offered one for civilians and I would be interested in hearing more about this. Here in MS, all we have to do is go up to the highway patrol, apply, and wait 4 months for them to do their back ground checks. Then it arrives in the mail. I did read the CC carry info...but getting professional input on it interpretation would be nice.

I second the motion for contacting CCW classes, or instructors for CCW. The classes we took here they brought in lawyers that specialize in self defense and shootings. They even handed out their cards to us.

Wow.

My CCW class (in Michigan) had a two hour session conducted by a local lawyer who knew the federal, state and, as far as they went, local laws and regulations pertaining to both concealed carry and general firearms use. He provided a handout that was a photocopy of the actual laws and, of course, his card. One point was driven home: if you are going to carry, at the very least have a lawyer who knows handgun laws in your personal phone book; if you ever have to pull the trigger, call law enforcement first and the lawyer second, and don't answer any questions until he gets there.

Also, when I applied for the permit the County Clerk provided another printout of the up to date state laws and regulations. Not the most fun reading, and frankly, having a lawyer turn it into understandable text was very useful.

I'm really surprised PA didn't provide at least some information on what the laws are. That borders on irresponsible.

Go to 'www.packing.org'.  They have the laws listed in the various states.  Here in Michigan we have 'www.mcrgo.org' for all local info and I also believe they cover the laws in other states also for those of us that may be traveling.  44 Man.

In PA you don't have to take a ccw class. I have taken a few pistol classes but never a specific class on ccw. I didn't get any info from the sheriffs dept. when I got my ccw either.

"It is better to be judged by twelve than carried by six," you have to follow you instinct when confronted with a deadly situation. All the laws in the world should not effect you instinct. but knowledge of the Law on the lesser issues is important. You may do the right thing and still go to jail. With the countless laws on the books we are all one little mistake from jail. The NRA is a good resource as well as packing.org There are some things such as prohibbited areas you can't carry etc. It can get very confusing , federad law, State Law, Local ordinaces. We really need federal right to carry. I remember coming home from Texas, Just out of the Army driving to Maine, In Maine gun laws are liberal as well as Texas, But when I got into Mass, driving tru I saw sighns besides the road making me a criminal. I had my hand gun packed away but was nervous as hell. I avoid Mass. Like the Plague. They ain't right down there. If someone is from there than " I will pray for you"

Rather than contacting a lawyer, the NRA has legal aid for members (or is that just for us life members?). Your state should also have the information available on line or in a pamphlet for all who carry. Its part of the information act. See what you can find at the range - they might have the pamphlet, on line and at your states website.

Hodgdon, Lyman, Speer, Sierra, Hornady = reliable resources
so and so's pages on the internet = not reliable resources
Alway check loads you find on the internet against manuals.
NEVER exceed maximum listed loads.

Gun Laws ????
Place round in chamber!
Aim at target!!
Finger on trigger??
Pull trigger!!
Bang.
Target has a hole in it.
Now depending on the target in question--legal questions may arise.
Make sure that you are the only one advising the reporting officer what went on.
Blessings
