Anyone ever sniffed at a deer?
« on: April 05, 2007, 02:51:45 AM »
I was sitting in a blind a couple of years ago and a mule deer doe walked by really close.  Inside of 20 yards.  She was just walking and nibbling the leaves.  I moved a little or made some small sound and she looked at me suspiciously.  I didn't want to spook her in case there was a big buck 20 yards behind her in the trees, but what to do?  She started acting nervous like she might pogo off.

I had one of those rare (for me) moments of insight and did what I've seen bucks do:  I sniffed long and loud.  It must have fooled her because she calmed down, put her head down, and nibbled some more leaves.  Over the next 30 minutes she worked her way to about 50 yards away before she disappeared into the trees.

Before you ask, of course there wasn't a big buck following her, or at least not one that I saw.

I have snorted at deer many times over the years and have always had one of the reactions from them.

1.) they run like you shot them in the azz with a pellet gun.

2.) they resume what they were doing without alarm.

3.) they come directly towards me, sometimes at a dead run until they perceive that I am not a deer.

why they do any of those things I don't know, maybe it's cause I snort differently each time, or maybe it's the mood they were in before I snorted. I have also noticed over the years that slowly and gently flaging a white hankie at waist height will attract deer to you that have have been already alert to your presence. I certainly would not suggest that anyone try this during any firearms season for deer.
"where'd you get the gun....son?"

About twenty years ago my son and I went hunting one afternoon, he had worked all night and got off about ten am that morning.  After a bite to eat, we drove the thirty miles out to our place.  My son set on the ground with his back to a large mesquite tree, I was across a wheat field in a twelve foot high deer blind.

About three that afternoon I looked across the field toward where my son was setting, there stood a nice little buck and two doe, one of the doe appeared to be a yearling and was considerably smaller than the other one.  I noticed the deer watching my son, the little doe walked a little closer, she sniffed, then moved even closer.. Finally, she moved up and actually touched his cheek with her nose causing him to wake up.  At first he didn't know what had touched him, but he moved his head and was staring the doe in the eye from about 6-8 inches.  It startled him, and he jumped, the other two deer turned and ran, the little doe came back for another sniff.  Even as my son stood up, the deer still had it's nose stuck out sniffing.  I suspect the deer was attracted by his snoring.

We still laugh about him going to sleep, but this is one of those times when I would have given a thousand bucks for a good video camera to record the incident.
