Big Conicals
« on: January 21, 2007, 12:30:54 PM »
I shoot a Remington 700 MLS in .54 cal.  I use is a Parker Production 505 grain conicals and while the cost for using these hunting is not great, shooting at the range is very expensive. This is an excellent hunting bullet with 120 grains of black FFG. I am looking to cast my own but I am having trouble finding a mould with the same characteristics as the big Hydra-Con. I also want to size and lube the conical. I have a Lyman 450 sizer but finding the necessary punches and die (I need a .549 die) has proved hopeless. I cast for several handgun calibers so I have most of the equipment I need. This is important also because most of the good .54 cal bullets are becoming very hard to find. I should point out I am 55 years old and followed Elmer Keith all my life. This is why I do not want to shoot them new fangled trick bullets with bells and whistles on them. There is NO replacement for displacement!

Good bullets can be found below. You pick the grain size and diameter. Be sure to ask for his all lead bullets and most purchasers get gas checks bullets.

Josey,

Bullshop has very good prices, but am not sure of his selection in .54 caliber. #2 lube on his bullets. Dan and Tina are great to deal with and his prices cannot be beat, that I know of. Give Dan and Tina a E-mail or phone call to see what he has to offer in a .54 cal.

Another option would be No Excuses Bullets, Dave is a great guy to deal with too, but he only has a 535 grainer in a .54 caliber.

LEE makes sizing dies.

Mountain Molds will make you anything you can design in his program, he has moved, is building his new shop from scratch, is just getting back up and running, and is filling a few orders I'm told. Check his forum out to see what he has been up to. It would kill the average person. :o

LEE can make a custom size die for ya( the type that screws into a reloading press), and so can Stlilwell tool and die (for your Lyman 450).
