NEF .45 Colt Carbine....ballistics??
« on: January 21, 2007, 03:48:22 PM »
Hey Guys,

I'm all ears over the new NEF carbine in .45 Colt.  What kind  of ballistics are they expecting from their carbine lenght barrel??  What kind of handloads might one expect to use??

My question is what will the bore diameter be and will the chamber be within specs?....<><.... ???

The skeptic in me says they will not get it right, but hopefully I am wrong.  Lots of guys really looked forward to the 44Mag before it came out, and they were not very happy with what they got.  I just have a feeling this is gonna be the same thing all over again.  My prediction, still, it's gonna made from the Survivor barrel.  Which means it will be long throated and I also believe it will be extractor and not ejector, which will not be a good choice for CAS shooters.  Just my 2 cents.  I hope I am wrong and they started from scratch.  One thing for sure, it will almost certainly be an extractor barrel, as all the new rifle barrels are.  Just have to wait and see.

It may have been made with Cowboy Action shooters in mind, if that is so it will surely have an extractor, only old fashinod extractors are allowed. But the question is, why should the majority suffer. Oh Yeah!!! That is the way the world seems to be going, the minority rules, the majority pays and suffers for it....<><.... :( >:(

Well,

Long throated can be handled.  I'm a handloader and would load.....say..... a 330 grain bullet shallowly into the brass, and fill the throat.  This would give me additional powder space inside the cartridge. An oversize bore could also be accomodated, as long as throat and bore are compatible.  An  overly large throat diameterwith a correct groove diameter  is another matter!

Perhaps the solution is to take one of the poor quality 44 Mag barrels and have it rebore, rifled, and chambered to the proper 45 Colt specs!

MSP,

I shoot Cowboy Action and the ejector is allowed except in one category of long range.  I have won many a long range match with the 38-55 Target using an ejector.  They aren't happy about it but it is allowed.  There is one category that does not allow an ejector and that is the Buffalo Long Range.  This category requires Black Powder only and no ejectors.  I drag out the Sharps for that one.

That'll be a moot point now, current .38-55s come with an extractor, but even the ejectors can be converted to extractor, just not the other way around, unfortunately and to the dismay of many here. >:(

Thnaks for that info kc5wx, I have nothing against cowboy shoots, they aound like a lot of good fun, just not many here in the frozen Northeast section of the country. I have a feeling if they had them around here I would have another addiction!!!....<><....  ::)

Well, look at me.  Now I've got two.  Dang this is going to be expensive.

Some info on the 38-55.  Now shoots 1.5 moa but don't ask what all I have to do to the ammo.  It's terrible.  Way too many operations.

The 204 is coming along.  Getting 1 moa now but the gun is still stock.  Using Hornady 32 grain and BL-(C)2.  Have to work on scope as it is bottomed out and still shoots 5 inches high at 200 yds.

Headed for Sportsman's Warehouse tomorrow.

More time and money headed down the tube.

Oh, and that doesn't include all the cowboy action guns that need attention.

I'm in Texas so get to shoot cowboy action matches every Sat and Sun.  I'm a full time RVer.  Spend all but a week a month on one of the ranges.  Terrible life.
